Job description

About Cohere

Cohere is a leading enterprise AI company focused on security-first foundation AI models and products crafted to address real-world business challenges. We develop and deploy state-of-the-art models that empower enterprises to build AI systems, driving wide adoption of AI technology worldwide. Our team comprises researchers, engineers, designers, and other specialists, all dedicated and passionate about enhancing our AI models' capabilities and the value they provide.

Headquartered in Toronto, with offices across London, New York City, San Francisco, Montreal, Paris, Berlin, and Seoul, we foster an inclusive team culture with ample opportunities for collaboration across global time zones.

Role Overview

We are seeking a senior professional to join our Agent Code team to push the boundaries of code-generating large language models (LLMs) and autonomous agents. This position focuses on research-driven and hands-on work involving the latest advancements in code LLMs and agent technology that automate complex tasks with minimal human intervention. You will collaborate closely with engineers and researchers to develop scalable, production-grade solutions leveraging cutting-edge compute resources and data.

This team operates primarily in Eastern to Central European time zones, so candidates located accordingly are preferred for effective coordination, though remote work is supported.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously monitor and incorporate recent research advances in code LLMs, autonomous agents, and related technologies into our systems.
  • Design robust, scalable methods for training code language models and delivering agent frameworks for inference and sampling, collaborating with the pretraining team on supervised fine-tuning (SFT) trajectories and reinforcement learning algorithms.
  • Improve benchmark performance (hillclimb) and create new benchmarks tailored to the requirements of enterprise clients.
  • Lead experimental initiatives on our advanced computational infrastructure to explore the limits of frontier large language models.

Candidate Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related domain with a track record of publications at premier conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, or EMNLP.
  • In-depth expertise in code LLMs and agent systems, demonstrated through active contributions to developing such models and a thorough understanding of current scientific developments.
  • Practical experience working with frontier LLMs applied in code generation or automation contexts.
  • Proficiency in software engineering, including strong skills in Python and frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Experience managing distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and building scalable system architectures.
  • A proactive and self-driven approach coupled with enthusiasm for tackling challenging and open-ended problems.

Work Environment and Benefits

  • This role is remote-friendly or office-based in one of our key locations. We value excellence regardless of location, with a preference for candidates aligned to key time zones for teamwork efficiency.
  • Full-time employees receive a weekly $75 lunch stipend or equivalent in local currency.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits, including dedicated mental health support budgets.
  • Retirement savings plans such as RRSP matching, 401K, or pension schemes.
  • 100% parental leave top-up for up to six months, applicable to any parent.
  • Annual enrichment packages covering arts, culture, fitness, wellness, quality time, workspace enhancements, and continuing education including conferences and coaching.
  • Generous paid vacation totaling six weeks (30 working days).
  • Resources for travel to other offices for remote employees and annual company-wide retreats.
  • For office-based staff, daily lunch programs, snack offerings, and frequent community events.
  • Remote workers benefit from coworking support and a $500 stipend for home office setup.
