About the Role
An established engineering firm catering to the pharmaceutical and life sciences industry is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to enhance their expanding team in Cork, Ireland. This position offers a great chance for a mechanically focused engineer who thrives in overseeing projects from initial concept through to manufacturing, collaborating closely with clients, production teams, and stakeholders in a tightly regulated environment.
Primary Responsibilities
- Interpret customer needs and user specifications into mechanical designs ready for production.
- Create detailed three-dimensional models and two-dimensional manufacturing drawings using CAD platforms like Solid Edge, SolidWorks, or Autodesk Inventor.
- Develop comprehensive general arrangement (GA), fabrication, and assembly drawings along with bills of materials (BOMs).
- Provide support across the entire design lifecycle including concept development, fabrication, assembly, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and final handover.
- Serve as the mechanical design expert, offering technical assistance to fabrication and assembly personnel.
- Contribute to design review processes and help obtain customer approvals on drawings and technical documents.
- Work collaboratively with project management, procurement, automation, quality control, and manufacturing departments to ensure smooth project execution.
- Oversee design modifications and handle variation requests during project progression.
- Assist in planning and conducting FAT/SAT procedures as necessary.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Degree qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- At least three years of experience designing mechanical systems, machinery, or equipment.
- Proficient in 3D CAD software such as Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or equivalent tools.
- Experienced in creating manufacturing documents including GA, fabrication, assembly drawings, and BOMs.
- Strong knowledge of sheet metal design, fabricated assemblies, and principles for design-for-manufacture.
- Proven ability to support fabrication, machining, or assembly teams during project operations.
- Capability to juggle multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Excellent communication skills with experience liaising directly with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Experience
- Background in pharmaceutical, life sciences, medical devices, food production, or other regulated manufacturing fields.
- Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
- Experience engaging in FAT and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) activities.
- Knowledge of ERP and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
- Understanding of machinery safety standards, CE marking, ATEX certification, or UL regulatory requirements.
