Job description
About Affirm and the Role
Affirm is transforming the credit landscape by offering transparent and consumer-friendly options for purchasing now and paying later without hidden fees or compounding interest. We are currently looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Resilience Engineering team, a critical function aimed at safeguarding and enhancing the reliability of our production environments through proactive validation approaches such as production load testing and chaos engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and communicate a clear vision for resilience engineering, emphasizing production load testing and chaos engineering as integral practices.
- Guide and support a team of engineers responsible for creating platforms and tools that facilitate safe experimentation in production settings.
- Collaborate with infrastructure, product, and security leadership to integrate resilience validation into the software development lifecycle effectively.
- Establish and promote best practices to safely evaluate system limits and failure modes in live production environments.
- Design and oversee platforms that enable controlled production load testing and fault injection with strong safety boundaries.
- Implement safeguards including isolation boundaries, approval processes, and automated rollback mechanisms to protect end users.
- Create systems offering comprehensive observability, traceability, and audit logging for all resilience experiments.
- Lead efforts to enhance system reliability by identifying weaknesses through load testing and chaos experiments.
- Develop precise monitoring, alerting, and incident response strategies tailored to proactive resilience validation.
- Work closely with engineering teams on executing safe production load tests and chaos experiments.
- Partner with infrastructure teams to develop guardrails that govern testing and experimentation practices.
- Enable widespread adoption of resilience techniques by delivering reusable tooling, frameworks, and standardized workflows.
- Identify systemic vulnerabilities and spearhead cross-functional initiatives to improve fault tolerance and reliability.
- Advocate for a culture centered on "test failure before failure tests you" throughout the organization.
Qualifications & Experience
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams focused on reliability, distributed systems, or infrastructure engineering.
- Hands-on expertise in production load testing, chaos engineering, or validating systems at scale.
- Proficiency with chaos engineering platforms such as Gremlin, Harness, or comparable tools.
- Deep understanding of failure modes in distributed architectures, including latency, partial failure, and cascading outages.
- Experience designing or operating systems that emphasize safety measures like isolation, rate limiting, guardrails, and auditability.
- Familiarity with cloud-native technologies such as AWS and Kubernetes, alongside observability solutions.
- Strong programming skills in languages like Python, Kotlin, Java, or equivalents.
- Exceptional problem-solving capability with the ability to balance long-term resilience improvements against immediate business priorities.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities with a proven record of influencing engineering best practices across teams.
Compensation and Benefits
This role is classified under Pay Grade P and Equity Grade 7 at Affirm. Base salary ranges from 181000 to 241000 CAD annually, with new employees usually starting at the lower end of the pay scale. The total compensation package may include monthly stipends for wellness, technology, and other lifestyle expenses. Affirm offers comprehensive benefits such as fully subsidized medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees and their dependents. Additionally, eligible employees may participate in equity reward programs through Affirm Holdings, Inc.
