Job description

Overview

Affirm is revolutionizing credit by providing transparent and user-friendly options, allowing consumers to purchase now and pay later without hidden fees or interest accumulation.

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Resilience Engineering team, playing a key role in safeguarding the reliability of our production systems through advanced validation methods like production load testing and chaos engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and champion the vision for resilience engineering at Affirm, emphasizing production load testing and chaos engineering as essential engineering approaches.
  • Guide and support a team focused on developing platforms and tools for safe experimentation in production environments.
  • Collaborate with leaders across infrastructure, product, and security to integrate resilience testing into the software development lifecycle.
  • Implement best practices to safely evaluate system limits and simulated failures within production.
  • Design and improve platforms enabling controlled load testing and fault injection in real environments.
  • Ensure protection mechanisms such as isolation boundaries, approval processes, and automatic rollback are in place to shield users.
  • Create systems that offer full observability, traceability, and auditability for resilience experiments.
  • Systematically detect vulnerabilities through testing and chaos experiments and drive improvements to reliability.
  • Develop monitoring, alert, and incident response procedures tailored for proactive resilience validation.
  • Partner with engineering teams to safely design and execute load tests and chaos experiments in production.
  • Work with infrastructure teams to establish guardrails around testing and experimentation.
  • Provide reusable tools, frameworks, and standard workflows to promote adoption of resilience practices.
  • Identify systemic failures and lead cross-department efforts to enhance reliability and fault tolerance.
  • Promote a culture prioritizing proactive failure testing.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams focused on reliability, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
  • Practical experience implementing production load testing, chaos engineering, or validating large-scale systems.
  • Familiarity with chaos engineering platforms such as Gremlin or Harness.
  • In-depth knowledge of distributed system failure modes including latency issues, partial failures, and cascading outages.
  • Experience building or maintaining systems with strong safeguards like isolation, rate limits, guardrails, and audit trails.
  • Comfortable working in cloud-native environments (AWS, Kubernetes) and using observability tools.
  • Strong coding skills in languages such as Python, Kotlin, or Java.
  • Excellent analytical abilities, balancing long-term resilience goals with immediate business priorities.
  • Outstanding communication and leadership skills with demonstrated impact on engineering practices across teams.
