Job description
About Affirm
Affirm is revolutionizing the credit industry by offering honest and transparent financing options that allow consumers to purchase now and pay later without hidden fees or compound interest.
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to lead our Resilience Engineering team. This position plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the reliability and safety of production systems through proactive validation methods such as production load testing and chaos engineering.
This role involves guiding the development of platforms and tools that enable engineers to safely test system behavior under stress and failure conditions in live environments, ensuring issues can be detected and resolved before impacting users.
Key Duties
- Define and promote the strategic vision for resilience engineering at Affirm with emphasis on production load testing and chaos engineering as essential engineering disciplines.
- Manage and mentor a team dedicated to creating platforms and tooling for safe production experimentation.
- Collaborate with leadership across infrastructure, product, and security teams to embed resilience validation in the software development lifecycle.
- Develop and implement best practices for safely stress-testing systems and simulating failure scenarios in production.
- Design and evolve platforms enabling controlled production load tests and fault injections with robust safeguards such as isolation, approval processes, and automated rollbacks to protect users.
- Build comprehensive systems that offer end-to-end observability, traceability, and auditing for all resilience experiments.
- Drive reliability enhancements by systematically exposing system weaknesses through load and chaos testing.
- Establish tailored monitoring, alerting, and incident response protocols for proactive resilience validation.
- Engage closely with engineering teams to support safe design and execution of production tests and chaos experiments.
- Partner with infrastructure to build guardrails around experiments and enable adoption of resilience practices by offering reusable tooling and frameworks.
- Identify systemic reliability weaknesses and lead cross-team initiatives to boost fault tolerance.
- Promote a culture of "test failure before failure tests you" throughout the organization.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams focused on reliability, infrastructure, or distributed systems.
- Practical expertise in production load testing, chaos engineering, or validating large-scale systems.
- Experience using chaos engineering platforms like Gremlin, Harness, or equivalent.
- Deep understanding of failure modes in distributed architectures, such as latency issues, partial outages, and cascading failures.
- Proven history building or operating systems with strong safety features including isolation boundaries, rate limiting, guardrails, and audit capabilities.
- Familiarity with cloud-native technologies such as AWS and Kubernetes, plus observability tools.
- Proficient programming skills in languages like Python, Kotlin, Java, or similar.
- Strong analytical problem-solving abilities with the capability to balance strategic resilience efforts against immediate business demands.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a proven record influencing engineering practices across multiple teams.
