Role Overview

The Maintenance Operative (Caretaker) will be responsible for daily facilities upkeep to help ensure the school premises and grounds are maintained to a high standard. This role supports the operational management of the buildings, focusing on safety, security, and cleanliness in compliance with all relevant regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Opening school buildings and grounds following set schedules.
• Securing all access points including buildings and gates at the end of each day.
• Operating intruder alarm systems and reporting any malfunctions or safety concerns.
• Performing routine safety and security inspections throughout the premises.
• Responding appropriately to alarm activations and emergency events.
• Providing support during school events, external lettings, and activities requiring after-hours access.
• Applicant must maintain the site’s security and safety consistently and adhere to policies and procedures.

Candidate Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

• Possession of a full UK driving licence.
• Experience working in building trades such as plumbing, electrical work, or decorating.
• A practical, hands-on approach to maintenance tasks.
• Effective communication skills.
• Demonstrable knowledge of building maintenance or grounds upkeep.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Motivation and enthusiasm to work without direct supervision.
• Willingness and ability to acquire new skills and techniques related to trades, safety, and grounds maintenance.
• Strong time management and ability to perform under pressure.

Desirable:

• IWFM Level 2 qualification.
• IOSH Level 2 safety certification.
• First Aid at Work certification.
• Fire Marshall qualification.
• Health and safety-related certifications.
• Previous experience in an educational facility setting.
• Professionalism in fulfilling tasks and responsibilities.

Contract Details and Additional Information

This position is a full-time fixed-term contract based at Huddersfield Grammar School, covering 40 hours per week, with a salary up to £27,632. The contract extends until August 2027.
