Maintenance Operative

About the Role

The Johnstown Estate seeks a dependable and hands-on Maintenance Operative to support the smooth running of our busy hotel and estate. This all-round maintenance position is ideal for someone who takes pride in fixing issues, solving problems, and maintaining a pleasant environment for guests and staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform general repairs and upkeep across the hotel premises.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests from various departments ensuring quick resolution.
• Handle basic plumbing tasks including fixing leaks, taps, toilets, drains, and associated pipework.
• Assist with electrical and lighting repairs as needed.
• Conduct handyman duties such as painting, decorating, carpentry, tiling, and minor structural repairs.
• Maintain equipment, machinery, fixtures, and fittings on site.
• Carry out regular inspections and preventative maintenance to avoid escalation of issues.
• Address urgent problems like leaks, blockages, flooding, power failures, or equipment malfunctions.
• Keep the maintenance workspace, tools, and equipment clean, safe, and orderly.
• Maintain accurate records of completed work and communicate further repair needs.
• Monitor inventory of supplies and notify the Maintenance Manager when stock needs replenishment.
• Collaborate with the Maintenance Team and other hotel departments to ensure safety and excellent facility standards.
• Adhere to all health and safety protocols and best practices.

Candidate Requirements

• Experience in maintenance, handyman, trades, or a closely related job role.
• Proficient with general repairs and maintenance activities.
• Able to diagnose problems and apply practical solutions effectively.
• Good knowledge or experience in basic plumbing repairs is strongly preferred.
• Skills in painting, carpentry, tiling, electrical work, or building maintenance are advantageous.
• Capable of working independently by using initiative while also functioning well within a team.
• Reliable, organized, and able to prioritize tasks in a bustling environment.
• Comfortable working in hotel or busy commercial settings, although hospitality experience is not mandatory.
• Dedicated to workplace safety and upholding quality standards.
• Friendly, communicative, and approachable personality.
• Trade qualifications are a plus but not essential; practical experience and a proactive attitude are most important.
• Possessing a clean full driving licence will be considered an advantage.

Additional Information

• The position requires flexibility to work during evenings, weekends, and public holidays as needed.
• Participation in an on-call rota for emergency maintenance situations may be required.
