Machine Learning Engineer, AI and Data Platforms

About the Role

The AI & Data Platforms (AiDP) team within IS&T drives AI-powered innovation at Apple by integrating data, app development, and machine learning, including generative AI, alongside data services and customer success teams. The mission is to create efficient solutions and facilitate widespread adoption of generative AI technologies across Apple.

This role offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment where advanced technical skills are consistently challenged. The selected engineer will be responsible for designing and building high-performance data systems that support analytics, AI applications, and business insights with minimal latency and high reliability. You'll develop scalable, distributed data services that embed generative AI capabilities to make complex data more accessible, intelligent, and actionable throughout Apple.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and evolve distributed data systems integrating open-source and Apple's internal platforms.
• Create new components and features throughout the development lifecycle, ensuring performance, scalability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with internal teams to understand analytical workflows and data requirements.
• Recommend ecosystem improvements that streamline the user experience and enable faster, deeper insights.
• Design data platforms incorporating generative AI and intelligent automation, ensuring they are reliable, scalable, and performant.
• Operate effectively in fast-paced collaborative settings and independently lead projects from inception to delivery.

Required Qualifications

• Experience in developing enterprise-grade data applications on distributed systems and cloud-based databases such as Snowflake and BigQuery.
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Scala, or Java.
• Hands-on experience with relational databases and building RESTful APIs.
• Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, including test-driven development.
• Familiarity with business intelligence concepts and foundational generative AI topics including large language models and prompt engineering.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
