Job description

Role Overview

Higgins Wairarapa is seeking a skilled and driven Leading Hand to join its Maintenance Team. This hands-on position involves assisting the Foreperson or Supervisor in executing a broad range of road maintenance cyclic tasks throughout the region. Ideal candidates are proactive leaders who enjoy outdoor work, adapt well to dynamic environments, and prioritize safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support Foreperson/Supervisor in scheduling and organizing daily maintenance cycles.
  • Lead and provide guidance to operators, labourers, subcontractors, and labour hire personnel on site.
  • Perform and oversee maintenance tasks such as pavement repairs, drainage upkeep, signage, roadside maintenance, and other network activities.
  • Ensure all tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and meet quality standards.
  • Manage allocation of equipment, materials, and human resources to optimize output.
  • Maintain clear communication with team members, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Advocate Higgins' safety, quality, and environmental protocols.
  • Mentor and support development of less experienced colleagues.

Candidate Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience in road maintenance, civil construction, infrastructure upkeep, or related fields.
  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience with small teams.
  • Comprehensive understanding of maintenance operations, machinery, and equipment.
  • Strong planning, problem-solving, and adaptability skills.
  • Hands-on approach and readiness to assist team members as needed.
  • Competent in interpreting work plans and specifications.
  • Possession of a full Class 1 driver’s licence; Class 2, WTR, and traffic management qualifications are advantageous.
  • Physically capable, dependable, and dedicated to safe working practices.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
  • Willingness to work extra hours when the workload requires.
