Role Summary
We are seeking a Lead Robotics & Hardware Engineer specializing in teleoperation and robot data acquisition. This remote, full-time role involves leading the design, prototyping, and integration of hardware systems to enable robust teleoperation and extensive robotic data collection for Cruq AI's automation platform. The position requires developing electronic and mechanical subsystems—including sensors, control modules, and communication interfaces—that assure reliable robot functionality across variable environments. Collaboration with cross-functional teams in software, AI, and operations will be critical to specify hardware needs, integrate perception and control components, and enhance the data collection framework.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and validate electronic circuits supporting robot teleoperation and data gathering.
- Select and assess hardware components ensuring system reliability and performance.
- Troubleshoot and debug hardware-related issues throughout development phases.
- Develop and implement test rigs and procedures to guarantee safety, operational reliability, and maintainability.
- Set hardware standards, maintain documentation, and establish best practices within engineering teams.
- Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with external partners or suppliers to facilitate scalable manufacturing and deployment.
Essential Qualifications
- Proven experience managing the complete hardware development lifecycle from concept through to deployment.
- Expertise in electronic circuit design, including schematic development, PCB layout review, power management, and signal and sensor interfacing.
- Strong knowledge of embedded systems and computer hardware such as microcontrollers, single-board computers, and various communication protocols.
- Practical experience in building and integrating robotic hardware components such as actuators, motor drivers, sensors, and safety mechanisms specifically for teleoperation.
- Knowledge designing systems optimized for large-scale robotic data acquisition, including sensor choice (cameras, IMUs, depth sensors), synchronization, data logging, and maintaining data integrity.
- Familiarity with mechanical design tools (CAD), electronic design automation (EDA) software, and laboratory testing instruments.
- Understanding of robotics middleware and protocols such as Robot Operating System (ROS).
