Lead Backend Software Engineer

Role Overview

We are looking for a Lead Backend Software Engineer to take on a pivotal, hands-on leadership position within a leading organisation's digital core. This role involves guiding the technical direction and execution of a platform that supports thousands of players, retailers, and tournament organisers across the globe, ensuring scalability at high volumes. You will work collaboratively with the Technical Lead to architect distributed systems and maintain infrastructure capable of growing sustainably alongside a dedicated international user base.

Key Responsibilities

• Design complex scalable, secure, and highly available distributed systems as the chief architect.
• Take ownership of delivery goals related to reliability, scalability, and performance, making well-informed technology stack decisions.
• Provide mentorship to engineers to promote excellence, ownership, and continuous enhancement of engineering practices.
• Work closely with Product and Design teams to convert strategic visions into scalable solutions through proofs of concept and minimum viable products.
• Lead efforts to optimize CI/CD pipelines, advance DevOps processes, and implement production-grade observability tools to assure superior operational quality.

Required Skills and Experience

• Proven professional background in developing modern backend systems and APIs, with prior experience as a Senior or Lead engineer.
• Advanced expertise in Python and Django (preferred), or comparable high-level programming languages.
• In-depth knowledge of designing and implementing scalable REST and GraphQL APIs.
• Practical experience using AWS, Docker, and infrastructure automation tools such as Terraform or AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK).
• Strong command of relational database systems including PostgreSQL and MySQL, along with experience in building distributed architectures.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts clearly to both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders.
