Kubernetes Engineer

Overview

We are looking for a skilled Kubernetes Engineer to join our global infrastructure and platform team focused on building automated, software-driven solutions for Kubernetes-based managed services and SaaS solutions at InterSystems.

This position involves collaborating with software engineers, Kubernetes architects, DevOps, site reliability engineering (SRE), and security professionals to develop secure, highly reliable platform features ready for production. The role emphasizes developing in Go with practical Kubernetes experience to convert repeatable operations into robust platform software.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and sustain Kubernetes-native applications in Go such as controllers, Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs), reconciliation logic, and automation modules.
• Develop automation for tasks including provisioning, configuration changes, upgrades, scaling, fault recovery, and general managed service operations.
• Write maintainable Go code along with unit, integration, and cluster-level testing routines.
• Assist in managing CI/CD workflows covering build, test, packaging, and deployment of Kubernetes platform software.
• Work closely with Kubernetes features like networking, storage, ingress, certificates, scheduling, security, and cluster lifecycle functionalities.
• Contribute to automation using tools and methodologies such as Helm charts, Terraform, GitOps practices, Argo CD, and Flux.
• Implement secure default settings including least-privilege RBAC, safe secrets management, workload isolation, and operational safeguards.
• Develop software that is observable and maintainable using logs, metrics, events, health checks, and status conditions.
• Diagnose and resolve problems with Kubernetes workloads, controllers, reconciliation failures, deployments, and related automation issues.
• Collaborate across engineering, SRE, security, and application teams and contribute to documentation, runbooks, and knowledge sharing.

Experience and Qualifications

• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in software or platform engineering, DevOps, infrastructure automation, cloud computing, or site reliability engineering.
• Proficient in Go development or significant software engineering skills with the ability to master Go.
• Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, container technology, Linux, and cloud-native deployment methods.
• Good understanding of Kubernetes APIs, including CRDs, controllers, reconciliation processes, RBAC, event handling, status conditions, and resource lifecycle management.
• Knowledge of Git, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and code review practices.
• Familiarity with Helm, Terraform, GitOps, Argo CD, Flux, or comparable automation tools.
• Understanding Kubernetes security principles such as RBAC, secrets, namespaces, network policies, admission controls, and workload isolation.
• Strong abilities in troubleshooting, communication, and collaboration.

Preferred Skills

• Experience working with frameworks like Kubebuilder, Operator SDK, controller-runtime, or client-go.
• Background in creating Kubernetes Operators, controllers, admission webhooks, or platform automation.
• Familiarity with managed Kubernetes platforms such as EKS, AKS, GKE, Rancher, or Spectro Cloud.
• Experience with observability and service mesh tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Fluent Bit, ELK/EFK, Istio, Linkerd, Cilium, Velero, Kasten, or Stash.
• Contributions to open-source projects related to Kubernetes, Go, or cloud-native platform engineering.
• Relevant certifications including CKAD, CKA, CKS, Terraform Associate, or LFCS.
