Job description
About Blue Oak Consulting
Blue Oak Consulting is a specialized advisory firm offering independent guidance on pricing, portfolio economics, capital allocation, and acquisition assumptions. Unlike traditional consulting firms that focus on broad transformation or high-level strategy, Blue Oak delves into critical commercial decisions where financial risks are significant and existing narratives are inadequate. The team bypasses corporate jargon and complex profit and loss structures to uncover areas where value is lost or capital is inefficiently employed. Operating across sectors such as software, manufacturing, and healthcare, they rigorously test whether the assumptions underpinning growth plans or acquisitions hold under scrutiny. Being a small, principal-led company, individuals handling the projects are directly responsible for outcomes. The company does not accept transaction-based fees, which supports absolute transparency in evaluating the economics behind decisions. Their mission is to deliver clarity through financial discipline and healthy skepticism, supporting clients through execution phases where theoretical decisions often encounter practical challenges.
Role Overview
The Junior Project Manager will collaborate closely with senior principals to maintain momentum on complex financial evaluations for a major client on the East Coast. This fully remote role demands disciplined time management and clear, effective communication. Responsibilities extend beyond timeline oversight to include understanding and validating financial data, ensuring evidence corresponds accurately to company claims. Daily activities involve detailed spreadsheet analysis, client coordination, and focused internal review concentrating on primary financial goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor progress of data collection across various departments of the client organization.
- Examine financial models for logical consistency, fully documenting and testing all underlying assumptions.
- Draft concise status reports emphasizing identified risks and data deficiencies rather than broad overviews.
- Support the evaluation of acquisition assumptions by comparing historical profit and loss data with new forecasts.
- Coordinate remote sessions and discussions with subject matter experts to collect qualitative insights on pricing approaches.
- Manage the project's documentation repository to ensure all evidence is accessible and validated for advisory reports.
- Collaborate with the analysis team to guarantee deliverables achieve clarity and maintain financial rigor.
- Oversee project timelines to avoid execution phase delays on commercial recommendations.
- Assist principals in simplifying complex data sets into clear reports that identify value leakage.
Candidate Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, business administration, or related quantitative disciplines.
- Advanced proficiency with Excel, capable of interpreting formulas and fundamental financial frameworks.
- A questioning mindset and eagerness to explore numerical anomalies.
- Strong written communication skills, favoring straightforward and jargon-free language.
- Excellent organizational skills with the capability to independently manage multiple responsibilities in a remote setup.
- Familiarity with project management tools or introductory data visualization software is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Ability to navigate complex profit and loss statements without losing focus on core commercial objectives.
- Enthusiasm to learn Blue Oak’s proprietary methods for financial analysis and assumption validation.
- Comfortable working under close review by senior leadership.
Offerings from Blue Oak Consulting
- Permanent full-time position with complete remote work flexibility.
- Opportunity for direct mentorship with firm principals across projects.
- Competitive salary aligned with the specialized nature of the consulting services and market conditions.
- Exposure to critical financial decision-making within varied industries such as healthcare and manufacturing.
- Organizational culture that prioritizes evidence-based reasoning and values truth over hierarchy or office politics.
- Hands-on training in capital allocation, pricing economics, and acquisition analytics.
- The chance to contribute to a significant assignment for an East Coast client from a remote location.
Additional Information
The work environment promotes uncovering the truth behind numbers, even when findings may be inconvenient for the client. Blue Oak appreciates professionals driven by accuracy rather than likability and who recognize the importance of execution in successful outcomes. Joining Blue Oak Consulting reflects a commitment to rigorous financial analysis, transparent communication, and results that are measurable and assumptions that withstand scrutiny, ultimately supporting tangible commercial achievements.
