Java R&D Team Lead

Overview

Guardsquare invites experienced Java software engineers to join their Munich office as a hands-on R&D Team Lead. This role involves leading a small team of 3 to 4 Java developers while actively contributing to software design, development, and maintenance. The position emphasizes technical leadership combined with individual contribution in areas intersecting Java, compiler technology, and application security.

Key Responsibilities

• Remain engaged in coding and development activities alongside your team.
• Design and enhance Java-based security products, focusing on bytecode and compiler technologies.
• Investigate sophisticated code hardening, optimization, and obfuscation methods.
• Address complex challenges aimed at securing mobile apps from reverse engineering efforts.
• Maintain and improve a complex codebase adhering to high coding standards and best practices.
• Troubleshoot technical problems and assist clients with advanced integration issues.
• Lead architectural decision-making and stay informed about trends in Java and mobile security.
• Ensure timely and quality delivery by effectively prioritizing tasks and clearing impediments.
• Mentor and coach developers for their technical skill enhancement and career progression.
• Establish performance objectives, provide constructive feedback, and conduct evaluations.
• Promote a collaborative culture founded on continuous learning and excellence.
• Drive process improvements and innovation aligned with Guardsquare's R&D values.

Candidate Profile

• Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least five years of professional Java software engineering experience, with prior leadership or mentoring responsibilities.
• Strong Java programming capabilities and solid software engineering principles.
• Interest or experience in software and mobile application security domains.
• Understanding or experience with low-level programming, compiler technologies, and code analysis/optimization is beneficial.
• A pragmatic approach with enthusiasm for raising technical standards.
• Proficiency in English communication.
• Commitment to onsite leadership and collaboration within a hybrid office environment in Munich.

Additional Beneficial Skills

• Familiarity with Android application development and ecosystem.
• Knowledge of Android build tools like Gradle and ProGuard.
• Experience with reverse engineering tools such as JADX and apktool.
• Understanding of Android bytecode and application internals.
• Past involvement with developer tools, security products, or static code analysis solutions.
