Intermediate Structural Engineer

About the Role

Join Cook Costello, a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy in Auckland offering Structural, Civil, Geotechnical, Surveying, and Geophysics services across New Zealand. We seek an Intermediate Structural Engineer with strong structural design background, ready to handle greater responsibility working alongside Senior and Chartered Engineers.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage in diverse residential and commercial projects including new construction, alterations, interior fit-outs, changes of use, and building assessments.
• Perform detailed seismic assessments, and foundation and retaining wall designs, collaborating with geotechnical engineers for practical solutions.
• Lead projects from initial briefing and conceptual design through to detailed design, construction support, and site inspection.
• Conduct structural analysis and design, develop calculations, drawings, and technical reports.
• Take charge of smaller commissions and portions of larger projects, with appropriate technical oversight.
• Maintain client relations through meetings, calls, and clear communication of engineering requirements, design alternatives, and next steps.
• Coordinate with clients, architects, contractors, and internal teams to manage tasks, budgets, deadlines, and promptly address issues.

Candidate Profile and Skills

• Possess a Washington Accord-accredited degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
• Bring approximately 3 to 6 years of consultancy experience in structural engineering including hands-on design, analysis, and project deliverables preparation.
• Demonstrate solid knowledge of New Zealand building regulations and structural design standards.
• Exhibit clear verbal and written communication skills, with experience explaining technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Adopt a professional and collaborative approach, effectively working across disciplines and offices.
• Show strong organization, engineering judgment, and the ability to identify when to seek guidance.
• Experience with structural analysis software like ETABS, SAP2000, SpaceGass or their equivalents.

Additional skills such as seismic assessment, fit-outs, complex foundations, and retaining wall design are advantageous but not compulsory. A genuine interest in expanding structural design capabilities is essential. Candidates pursuing Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registration, or those working toward it, are especially welcome.
