Job description

About the Role

This leadership position offers an exceptional chance to guide the people strategy for a well-established company engaged in significant construction and infrastructure projects. Located in Melbourne CBD, this permanent, full-time role reports to the Managing Director and is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. The role encompasses strategic human resources management, workforce planning, organizational capability, employee and industrial relations, talent management, culture stewardship, and leadership development across a complex, project-driven business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement the people strategy aligned with business goals, project demands, and future workforce planning.
  • Provide expert advice and collaborate closely with the Managing Director, Executive Leadership Team, and senior operational managers.
  • Oversee strategic workforce planning throughout major project lifecycles including mobilization, retention, redeployment, and demobilization phases.
  • Manage complex employee relations and industrial relations issues, specifically within Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) frameworks, employee performance, and workforce risks.
  • Collaborate with leadership and HR teams in complex construction and joint venture settings.
  • Lead efforts in organizational change management, talent development, succession planning, remuneration, leadership capability building, and culture enhancement.
  • Guide and advance the HR team, fostering capability growth and promoting collaboration across the business.
  • Effectively navigate intricate stakeholder environments, balancing operational needs and organizational priorities.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will be a commercially astute HR leader with extensive experience at senior levels within construction, infrastructure, or engineering sectors, particularly with exposure to major projects. They will be adept at working with executive teams and have comprehensive knowledge of Australian employment law and ER/IR matters within EBA contexts.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Proven senior HR leadership roles such as HR Director, Head of HR, or General Manager People & Culture.
  • Substantial experience within construction, infrastructure, or engineering sectors involving major projects.
  • Strong understanding of Australian employment legislation and EBA environments.
  • Experience operating in complex project or joint venture structures.
  • Expertise in strategic workforce planning including mobilization, demobilization, redeployment, and organizational change.
  • Broad human resources capabilities covering talent acquisition, remuneration, performance management, organizational development, and culture.
  • Demonstrated leadership of HR teams and partnership with senior executives and operational leaders.
  • Experience navigating complex, multi-layered stakeholder environments.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Business, Employment Relations or a related field.

Leadership Style

The candidate should be collaborative, patient, and pragmatic, confident to offer constructive challenge, and possess sound judgment on influencing and timing. Comfortable working within evolving leadership structures rather than fast-paced autonomous settings, the candidate will demonstrate cultural sensitivity and communication adaptability to build trust across diverse groups and effectively guide organizational change by balancing momentum with alignment.

Opportunity Highlights

  • Close collaboration with the Managing Director and Executive Leadership Team.
  • Leading and shaping the organization's people strategy.
  • Management of an established HR function.
  • Participation in significant construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Supporting organizational growth and workforce transformation initiatives.
  • Comprehensive role that spans strategy, operations, and capability development.
  • Flexibility to work from home one day per week.

Additional Information

Given the confidential nature of this role, further details about the organization will be shared upon initial confidential discussions with qualified candidates. Experienced senior HR leaders in the construction, infrastructure, or engineering industries are encouraged to apply.
