Role Overview
The available position is a full-time onsite Horticulturist role at JD Propagation, based in Greater Melbourne. The appointed individual will be responsible for daily plant maintenance activities, including assessing plant health, applying pest and disease management techniques, and managing propagation processes like potting, pruning, and transplanting. Additional tasks include upkeep of nursery beds and growing zones, coordinating irrigation planning, and aiding in landscape upkeep when necessary.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Oversee plant health by regularly inspecting and applying appropriate treatments for pests and diseases.
- Manage propagation tasks such as potting, pruning, and moving plants to suitable growing areas.
- Maintain nursery beds and growing spaces to support optimal plant development.
- Schedule and coordinate irrigation systems to ensure adequate plant hydration.
- Support activities related to landscape maintenance as required.
- Collaborate closely with other nursery staff to meet production targets and uphold quality standards.
- Ensure work environments are clean, safe, and well-organized.
- Keep accurate records related to plant stock and assist with inventory management.
- Occasionally interact with customers or suppliers regarding plant quality and availability.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Proven hands-on expertise in gardening and landscape maintenance, including nurturing healthy plants and outdoor environments.
- Understanding of botany and plant physiology, particularly regarding growth, propagation, pests, and diseases.
- Practical experience with irrigation systems and landscaping tasks, including installation and troubleshooting.
- Formal qualification in horticulture, plant science, or a corresponding discipline or equivalent practical nursery experience.
- Capability to carry out physical outdoor duties in diverse weather and safely operate tools and equipment.
- Strong attention to detail, observational skills, and a commitment to environmental sustainability and safe work practices.
- Good communication abilities and aptitude for cooperative teamwork within a nursery setting.
