About the Role
The Head of Software & Digital Engineering leads Flip Australia's software engineering function, overseeing technical architecture, digital platforms, engineering standards, and technology delivery. This role combines strategic leadership, people management, hands-on software development, cloud platform ownership, security, and stakeholder communication to ensure Flip's technology platforms are secure, reliable, scalable, and aligned with business needs.
Responsibilities
- Oversee the complete Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) for all software platforms, managing planning, requirements, backlog refinement, estimation, development, testing, deployment, release, and post-release verification.
- Establish and uphold application, integration, data, and platform architecture and set the technical direction and engineering standards for the development team.
- Remain actively engaged in system design and production development including applications, APIs, integrations, background workers, and business logic.
- Lead the design, operation, and optimization of AWS-hosted workloads utilizing services such as EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, S3, CloudFront, IAM, networking, and monitoring.
- Integrate security best practices throughout the engineering process by conducting application security assessments, implementing OWASP-aligned controls, and managing vulnerability and penetration testing.
- Design and sustain data models, schemas, migration processes, and integrations, while optimizing database queries and data access methods.
- Continuously refine build, test, and deployment workflows, advocate automated testing, and maintain clear pull request, branching, and code review procedures.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and development opportunities to software engineers, setting objectives and supporting career growth.
- Manage several software and technology projects simultaneously by translating business needs into concrete technical delivery plans and handling risks and dependencies.
- Collaborate with executive management and key stakeholders to convert business requirements into effective technical solutions while communicating technology risks and opportunities.
Candidate Profile
- Extensive commercial experience in software engineering.
- Proven track record in leading software engineering teams.
- Strong hands-on development skills with emphasis on backend systems and API design.
- Deep knowledge of relational database design and data modeling techniques.
- Experience with AWS infrastructure design and operation.
- Well-versed in secure software development methodologies.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, code reviews, and release management practices.
- Capable of handling production incidents and conducting root cause analyses.
- Expertise in software architecture and solution design.
Additional Information
Employment Nature: Full-time, permanent, 38 hours weekly, Monday to Friday.
Location: On-site at Maroubra, NSW, Australia.
Salary Range: AUD 150,000 to 180,000 annually plus superannuation.
Reporting To: General Manager.
Experience Requirement: Minimum 3 years relevant experience.
