Job description
About Fresco
Fresco is a smart kitchen platform collaborating with top appliance brands globally to build and scale connected cooking solutions. Our platform accelerates product launches, enhances the experience for home cooks, and advances digital transformation efforts worldwide.
Our mission is to empower everyone to cook delicious meals. Powered by KitchenOS and the Fresco AI Cooking Companion, we integrate appliances from various brands, facilitate rapid onboarding, and operate internationally in over 15 languages. Our partners include Panasonic, Middleby, Kenwood, Instant Pot Brands, Bosch, GE Appliances, Arda, and LG, supporting a global team based in Dublin and Madrid.
Role Overview
We are seeking a senior software engineer to lead the architectural design and development of KitchenOS, our multi-sided smart kitchen platform. This hands-on role involves collaborating with a committed platform team to coordinate approximately 20 event-driven Python microservices running on AWS Lambda. You will influence architectural decisions that ensure the system remains performant and cost-efficient, elevating the abstractions utilized by the team.
Responsibilities
- Architect and develop ~20 Python 3.14 Lambda-based microservices covering device control, cooking sessions, media, recipes, and authentication.
- Design and implement event-driven patterns using AWS EventBridge, SQS, and SNS to manage service interactions, carefully balancing synchronous versus asynchronous communication and delivery guarantees.
- Own API and schema design, enhancing shared infrastructural components such as API Gateway, VPC, caching layers, and DynamoDB tables; influence decisions through design documentation and collaborative code reviews.
- Maintain ongoing responsibility for deployed services, participating in on-call rotations supported by self-service deployment and monitoring tools.
- Optimize architecture for cost efficiency by selecting appropriate memory and timeout settings, minimizing noisy events and heavy payloads, and proactively identifying cost issues with Cost Explorer and Datadog.
- Mentor colleagues and promote technical growth within the platform team via knowledge sharing and other initiatives.
Requirements
- Extensive backend engineering experience (typically 5+ years), especially with AWS services and event-driven systems, focusing on service and architecture design rather than only isolated functions.
- Strong competence in infrastructure as code, preferably AWS CDK (construct authoring preferred) or Terraform expertise.
- Proficient in Python development utilizing strict typing frameworks such as Pydantic v2 and pyrefly.
- Experience with databases and data stores including DynamoDB, Redis (Valkey), PostgreSQL (SQLModel/Alembic), and Elasticsearch.
- Familiarity with AI engineering tools and capability to lead their integration within the team’s workflows.
- Ability to comprehend IoT and embedded protocol code (e.g., CBOR, KSUID, CRC) confidently.
- Excellent English communication skills, capable of articulating technical concepts to both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders.
Work Style & Team Culture
- Function as a senior individual contributor providing deep technical ownership and leading influence through code, architectural design, and reviews, without people management responsibilities.
- Apply thoughtful trade-offs in architectural choices concerning event delivery, concurrency management, and synchronous/asynchronous processing, challenging inefficient infrastructure.
- Manage your infrastructure code and observability tools, including deployment pipelines, Datadog APM, Lambda tracing, structured logging, and alarms.
- Share responsibility for on-call support ensuring service reliability.
- Maintain engineering best practices such as strict typing, unit testing, and use of Python tooling like uv, ruff, pyrefly, and Poe.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with multi-tenant SaaS platforms.
- Knowledge of Large Language Model (LLM) integration, including prompt pipelines and structured data extraction.
- Understanding of appliance and IoT protocols.
Employee Benefits and Culture
Working at Fresco means joining a fast-growing, venture-backed startup in an emerging industry. We emphasize effective prioritization over busyness, foster respect and open communication among all team members, and value authenticity and trust. We offer competitive market salaries, equity options through an employee share scheme, and a flexible hybrid or fully remote working arrangement.
We believe diversity drives innovation and are committed to an inclusive workplace welcoming candidates from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Candidates with transferable or unconventional skills are encouraged to apply and share their unique fit for the role.
