Job description
Role Overview
The Head of Formulation & Development is accountable for steering pharmaceutical product formulation from ideation through lab development, scale-up, technology transfer, validation stages, and finally to commercialization. This leadership role ensures that formulations are robust, stable, cost-effective, scalable, and compliant with regulatory demands. Collaboration with cross-functional teams including Analytical Development, QA, QC, Regulatory Affairs, Production, Purchase, Packaging Development, and external manufacturers is crucial.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead creation of new pharmaceutical formulations across various dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, oral liquids, and topicals.
- Develop formulation strategies tailored to API attributes, therapeutic goals, commercial and regulatory needs.
- Supervise pre-formulation, excipient compatibility, optimization, stability studies, and trials.
- Choose appropriate APIs, excipients, manufacturing processes, and packaging suitable for commercial-scale production.
- Assess new product opportunities technically and develop concrete plans and feasibility reports to guide prioritization.
- Drive scale-up and technology transfer processes across laboratory to commercial manufacturing scales, ensuring smooth transition and addressing production issues.
- Investigate and resolve formulation, manufacturing, stability, assay, and packaging challenges with corrective actions.
- Design and review stability protocols and data to assure product shelf-life and packaging integrity, initiating reformulations if necessary.
- Maintain thorough documentation including development reports, master formula records, batch records, technology transfer documents, and validation support files.
- Provide technical insight for regulatory submissions, including dossier support and query responses aligned with Indian and international standards.
- Evaluate and coordinate with third-party vendors and manufacturing partners, conducting technical assessments and cost optimization dialogues.
- Manage cross-departmental communications to ensure timely product progression from concept to launch.
- Lead and nurture the formulation development team by assigning work, monitoring progress, conducting training, setting KPIs, and ensuring succession readiness.
- Ensure compliance with GMP, GLP, GDP, SOPs, and maintain high standards of data integrity supporting audits and CAPA implementation.
Qualifications & Experience
- Master’s degree in Pharmacy (Pharmaceutics or Industrial Pharmacy); Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics or Pharmaceutical Sciences is advantageous.
- Preferably 5-7 years’ experience in pharmaceutical formulation development with at least 5 years in a managerial or leadership role.
Technical Expertise
- Comprehensive knowledge of pre-formulation, formulation design and optimization, various dosage forms including tablets, capsules, liquids, and topicals.
- Expertise in granulation, compression, coating, encapsulation methods, scale-up, process optimization, and technology transfer.
- Familiarity with stability studies, excipient functionality, API-excipient compatibility, dissolution, drug release, and packaging.
- Strong understanding of GMP, GLP, GDP, ICH guidelines, QbD, risk assessment, process validation, regulatory requirements, and investigational techniques.
Key Competencies
- Advanced formulation and development expertise with strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Leadership and team management including project oversight and multi-project handling capabilities.
- Ability to maintain rigorous documentation, collaborate cross-functionally, and manage vendor/partner relationships efficiently.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with commercial awareness and cost-management focus.
Performance Indicators
- Number of new products developed successfully within timelines.
- First-time-right scale-up and technology transfers.
- Stability, robustness of formulations, and reduction in repeat trials or development failures.
- Competent handling of regulatory queries and documentation compliance.
- Efficient cost control and optimization efforts.
- Team productivity and skill development achievements.
