Role Overview

The Pet Stylist is responsible for delivering expert grooming services, including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts, styling, nail trimming, ear and gland cleaning. Prioritizing pet safety and comfort, they ensure pets look and feel their best while providing excellent customer service to pet parents. This position may include additional duties assigned by management and offers growth opportunities such as becoming a Salon Leader or Grooming Instructor.

Responsibilities

• Perform professional grooming tasks in line with pet owner preferences and breed standards under moderate supervision
• Operate and maintain grooming tools such as clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers
• Ensure pet wellbeing during grooming by monitoring for discomfort, illness, or injury and communicating concerns promptly
• Assess individual pet needs based on coat, skin, and temperament
• Engage with customers professionally, addressing inquiries and providing grooming advice
• Educate pet owners on grooming maintenance and recommend at-home care products
• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of grooming tools and salon following company policies
• Adhere to Petco's grooming standards and safety guidelines to ensure consistent quality
• Assist with training and supporting junior groomers when leadership is absent

Qualifications & Experience

• Completion of Pet Stylist Apprentice program or prior experience and technical training in pet grooming
• High school diploma or GED preferred but not mandatory
• Ability to independently solve grooming challenges with guidance as needed
• Dedicated to productivity, performance, and ownership in grooming duties
• Strong attention to detail ensuring precise grooming
• Passion for animal care and interest in advancing a grooming career
• In-depth knowledge of dog breeds, grooming needs, health issues, and behavior
• Expertise in breed-specific grooming cuts and styling techniques
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with pet owners and colleagues
• Ability to handle various pet temperaments with care and empathy
• Willingness to work weekends, evenings, and holidays according to salon schedule

Work Environment

This role is primarily indoors within a grooming salon requiring standing for long periods, bending, kneeling, and occasional lifting up to 30 pounds. The environment might be noisy and wet with frequent interactions with pets and team members. Occasional use of ladders or cleaning tools may be necessary.
