Role Overview

This role focuses on grading various grains including wheat, oil seeds, and pulses. It involves providing expert technical advice and training for inspectors, maintaining communication with grain elevators on grading matters, and performing laboratory analyses and data evaluations in compliance with the Canada Grain Commission guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform all tasks expected of a Grain Inspector and Level 2 Grader, showcasing proficiency at both levels.
• Manage sample handling processes such as logging, organizing, storing, distributing, and disposal post-inspection.
• Prepare and clean grain samples using Carter dockage testers for grading accuracy.
• Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory instruments including moisture meters, protein testers, scales, ELISA readers, and Carter dockage testers, ensuring optimal performance before analysis.
• Conduct various laboratory analyses like moisture content, protein levels, dockage, test weight, mycotoxin presence, germination, gluten content, and falling number tests.
• Execute specialized laboratory tasks related to branch-specific analyses such as malt barley variety identification and audits.
• Maintain laboratory inventories and supplies including gloves, dust masks, and filter papers.
• Keep workplace areas clean by performing dusting, sweeping, and other housekeeping duties.
• Adhere rigorously to requirements outlined in the Canada Grain Act and related regulations.
• Follow CFIA sampling protocols, Canada Grain Commission standards, SGS Standard Operating Procedures, and any client-specific guidelines.
• Issue initial and final grading reports for various inspection types including food, container, and industrial inspections under Government Inspection Services.
• Assist in preparing and conducting on-site final analysis reports, completing inspection documentation.
• Inspect and grade incoming grain types both in the laboratory and at onsite locations.
• Perform off-site grading and sampling as well as other special projects as assigned.
• Provide technical and operational support and mentor junior grading staff in collaboration with supervisors and senior personnel.
• Review analytical data and communicate findings clearly to grain elevators.
• Carry out comprehensive grain inventory audits covering weight and grade accuracy.
• Offer leadership and guidance across teams, supporting peers and management as necessary.

Qualifications

• Completion of at least a High School diploma.
• Minimum of five years’ experience working as a Grain Grader Level 2.
• Prior involvement in preliminary grain inspections and grading is considered advantageous.
