Role Overview
The General Manager Data & AI is a key senior leadership position within New Zealand Technology, tasked with driving ANZ's enterprise-wide Data & AI strategy locally. Reporting to the CIO New Zealand & Pacific, this role focuses on strategic leadership in data governance, risk management, regulatory compliance, operational models, and the adoption of AI. The objective is to responsibly harness data and AI capabilities to create business value while ensuring all regulatory requirements are met.
This position provides a unique chance to shape ANZ’s Data & AI direction in New Zealand by balancing innovation, customer outcomes, regulatory trust, and compliance. Responsibilities include embedding data governance frameworks, elevating data risk and compliance practices, driving responsible AI and advanced analytics deployment, and advancing ANZ’s Data & AI capabilities. The role oversees data platform strategies, operational models, and enterprise initiatives aligned to ANZ’s strategic goals.
Collaboration is critical as this role partners with the Group Chief Data & Analytics Officer, CIO New Zealand & Pacific, and business leaders to embed data-informed decision making and influence the Data & AI future within the New Zealand market.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the execution of ANZ's enterprise Data & AI strategy across New Zealand, converting strategic goals into tangible outcomes benefiting customers, colleagues, and the business.
- Develop and instill robust data governance, ownership, and operational models to enhance data quality, accountability, and consistency throughout the organization.
- Guide ANZ’s AI approach in New Zealand, facilitating responsible adoption of AI and advanced analytics while maintaining an equilibrium between innovation, risk mitigation, governance, and regulatory compliance.
- Steer data risk and compliance efforts to ensure stringent controls, regulatory alignment, and productive collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Work alongside senior leaders in Technology, Risk, and business units to integrate the Data & AI agenda, influence organization-wide priorities, and support strategic decision-making.
- Promote greater adoption and utilization of data products, insights, and enterprise tools to create a culture where data is trusted, accessible, and effectively leveraged to enhance outcomes.
- Provide strategic oversight of critical data platforms and vendor partnerships, ensuring these resources are secure, resilient, cost-efficient, and capable of meeting future requirements.
- Support the advancement of enterprise transformation efforts by enabling Data & AI capabilities that align with ANZ’s long-term strategic aspirations.
- Build and lead a high-impact Data & AI team by attracting top talent, nurturing skills development, and fostering a workplace environment that enables people to excel.
Required Skills and Experience
- Proven executive leadership experience in designing and implementing Data, AI, or Analytics strategies within large and regulated organizations.
- Extensive knowledge in data governance, operational frameworks, risk management, and regulatory compliance with a focus on cultivating trusted and enduring enterprise outcomes.
- Strong background in overseeing responsible AI adoption and emerging technologies, with strategic insight to unlock value while ensuring governance, control, and trust are upheld.
- Track record of influencing senior executives, regulators, and stakeholders to drive alignment and enterprise-wide change in complex business environments.
- Experience in successfully leading high-performing teams and scaling organizational capability across data, analytics, AI, and technology domains.
- Demonstrated leadership resilience, sound judgment, and presence to balance innovation, customer needs, risk considerations, and regulatory demands.
