Forward Deployed Engineering Manager, AI, Google Cloud

About the Role

Google is seeking a Forward Deployed Engineering Manager to lead a team of AI/ML engineers focused on deploying advanced, customized AI solutions within customer environments. This role bridges the divide between breakthrough AI technologies and practical, production-ready implementation. The manager will provide technical guidance while aligning priorities with Product, Engineering, and Sales leadership to overcome challenges such as data readiness, integration complexities, and state management for enterprise-grade AI maturity.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the technical authority setting coding standards, architectural principles, and performance benchmarks to enhance software engineering quality.
• Collaborate with Sales and technical leaders to shape requirements for major accounts, assigning specialized experts in MLOps, GenMedia, or agentic systems where needed.
• Lead recruitment for the forward deployed engineering team, assessing skills in AI/ML, systems engineering, and software development.
• Identify and address gaps in emerging technologies like Model Context Protocol (MCP), tool-calling, and foundational models to maintain cutting-edge expertise.
• Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to remove obstacles, transform user insights into development roadmaps, and create internal tools that enhance organizational efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• At least 8 years in cloud computing or customer-facing technical roles.
• A minimum of 2 years managing software engineering or related frontline technical teams in a cloud setting.
• Proficiency with Python or comparable programming languages.
• Experience creating AI or Generative AI solutions, including designing multi-agent workflows and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a similar technical field.
• Background in driving industry-wide agentic transformations.
• Expertise in designing secure, observable multi-agent AI systems leveraging complex patterns such as ReAct and self-reflection, along with advanced state management and tool invocation protocols.
• Skills in crafting intuitive user interfaces for intricate AI and agentic systems with an emphasis on context engineering, transparency, and explainability to build user trust.
• Experience architecting AI solutions within complex infrastructures that ensure data sovereignty and governance.
• Capability to conduct discovery interviews that translate complex hardware and AI constraints into strategic insights for executives and technical teams.
