Job description

About the Company

H W Richardson Group is a family-owned business based in Southland with interests spanning transport, building, fuels, construction materials, contracting, and property operations across New Zealand and Australia. Its Construction Materials division includes Allied Concrete, Christchurch Ready Mix, and New Zealand Independent Cement, providing concrete, aggregates, and cement nationwide.

Role Overview

Reporting directly to the General Manager of Construction Materials and with a dotted line to the Group CFO, you will effectively act as the divisional CFO, taking responsibility for the majority of finance activities within the division. This period marks an exciting transformation and simplification phase for the division, and you will lead the finance function to support this change.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the General Manager and Regional General Managers on strategy development, growth initiatives, and essential business drivers.
  • Lead and develop a finance team of five, overseeing the finance team at Christchurch Ready Mix.
  • Partner with Plant Managers to support and influence financial outcomes across the division.
  • Manage budgeting, forecasting, and conduct monthly performance reviews against planned targets.
  • Create business cases and oversee capital expenditure projects.
  • Steer the division’s pricing strategies and margin frameworks.
  • Champion the division's involvement in the Group's finance transformation and simplification initiatives.
  • Supervise management, statutory and tax reporting, audit processes, and internal control systems.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Tertiary qualification in accounting or commerce; holding CA ANZ or equivalent credentials is advantageous.
  • At least five years of senior finance experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop finance teams effectively.
  • Strong expertise in planning, budgeting, forecasting, and performance management.
  • Proven business partnership skills, able to translate financial data into practical terms for non-financial managers.
  • Experience driving process improvements across finance and administrative functions.
  • Desirable experience in multi-site, asset-intensive, or operationally complex environments.
  • Valued exposure to finance transformation projects and system upgrades.

Benefits and Opportunities

This position offers a role equivalent to a divisional CFO, with representation on the divisional leadership team and a direct reporting line to the Group CFO. The role provides significant commercial influence with the opportunity to lead transformational change, impacting both operational levels and executive decision-making. It's ideal for an inquisitive finance leader eager to challenge existing processes and implement improvements.
