Role Overview

We are recruiting a Facilities Maintenance & Recycling Operator to join our team in Porirua, Wellington. This role combines hands-on facilities upkeep with support of our site recycling efforts, contributing directly to safety and sustainability goals. The position suits an individual who enjoys varied daily tasks, takes pride in maintaining a safe and tidy work environment, and excels in practical problem resolution.

Core Responsibilities

• Operate recycling machinery safely and effectively, including balers and compactors.
• Collect, sort, and prepare recyclable materials.
• Arrange recycling pickups with external vendors and monitor waste streams to pursue reduction opportunities.
• Keep recycling areas organized, clean, and compliant with safety standards.
• Conduct routine building maintenance such as minor carpentry, painting, plumbing repairs, and furniture fixes.
• Maintain exterior site elements including grounds, fencing, signage, and walkways.
• Support office moves and facility enhancement projects.
• Respond swiftly to maintenance requests while ensuring safety and quality completion.
• Coordinate and oversee contractors on-site and perform regular inspections of premises and infrastructure, identifying and reporting issues.
• Provide backup support to the Facilities Superintendent as needed.

Candidate Requirements

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

• Proven experience in general maintenance, facility support, or handyman roles.
• Proficient and confident use of hand and power tools.
• Strong mechanical aptitude accompanied by effective problem-solving capabilities.
• Firm commitment to health and safety practices in the workplace.
• The ability to work independently while managing varied workload demands.
• Good interpersonal and teamwork communication skills.
• Physical fitness suitable for performing manual labor tasks.

Desirable Attributes:

• Facilities maintenance experience within manufacturing or industrial settings.
• An understanding of recycling, waste management, or sustainability practices.
• Experience coordinating contractor schedules and activities.
• Possession of a forklift license and Elevated Work Platform certification.
• Current First Aid certification.
