Job description
About Halter
Halter is dedicated to empowering farmers and graziers to manage their operations more efficiently and sustainably. Our technology enables cattle to move independently without traditional herding methods like quad bikes, dogs, or fences, transforming the livestock grazing industry. Our innovative approach improves productivity and changes lives through cutting-edge wearable technology. Supported by leading investors, we promote a culture of high performance and meaningful problem-solving.
Role Overview
We seek a skilled electronics engineer to take full responsibility for critical components of our collar hardware. This position requires leading design decisions, addressing complex field challenges, and managing projects from initial concept through to large-scale deployment. Candidates will handle ultra-low power system design, RF tuning, solar energy integration, battery management, audio, and high-voltage circuits.
Typical Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and test reliable electronics solutions for advanced animal wearables and related infrastructure.
- Manage the entire electronic design process including component selection, simulation, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, troubleshooting, documentation, manufacturing, and testing.
- Innovate to enhance hardware reliability and performance, while reducing costs to meet ambitious objectives.
- Collaborate closely with firmware, advanced systems, mechanical, production, and agricultural teams.
- Design with consideration for manufacturing efficiency, testing, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).
- Create and execute comprehensive validation plans to ensure critical features meet specification.
- Perform root cause analyses on manufacturing and field failures and provide actionable feedback for design improvement.
Candidate Profile
- Holds a tertiary qualification in Electronics Engineering or a related field.
- Possesses at least five years of professional experience, ideally progressing from larger engineering firms to roles with increased autonomy, suitable for senior to lead or staff levels.
- Demonstrates a successful track record in designing dependable electronics hardware and delivering products into high volume manufacturing, including full lifecycle management.
- Experienced designing and implementing printed circuit boards with microcontrollers (MCUs), systems on chip (SoCs), inertial measurement units (IMUs), GPS, WiFi, LoRa, and common communication interfaces (I2C, SPI). Skilled with operational amplifiers, ADCs/DACs, switching power supplies (SMPS), low dropout regulators (LDO), and analog/digital mixed-signal designs.
- Expertise in ultra-low power Internet of Things (IoT) electronics including renewable power generation (solar and high voltage generation with insulation), power conversion (DC-DC), and consumption optimization.
- Proficient with electrical engineering test and design tools such as SPICE simulation software, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, signal generators, LCR meters, current clamps, and high voltage meters.
- For senior professionals: experience mentoring team members, leading technical reviews, or end-to-end ownership of subsystems.
- Strong organizational, time management, and communication abilities.
- Thrives in dynamic, self-driven startup environments.
- Located in Auckland with willingness and ability to travel approximately two times per quarter to manufacturing locations in China and Thailand, with fewer trips expected for senior roles.
- Experience working in startups or rapidly growing companies is advantageous but not mandatory.
Company Culture and Work Environment
Halter maintains an office-first culture valuing strong in-person relationships as a foundation for collaboration, learning, and effective communication. While primarily working onsite, flexibility to work remotely is extended as needed within a high-trust environment. Our team values hard work, innovation, and meaningful impact, fostering a workplace uniquely energizing and supportive.
Diversity and Inclusion
Our commitment is to a workplace where all individuals can be authentic and do their best work. We encourage candidates from underrepresented groups to apply even if they do not meet every qualification. We value diverse perspectives and experiences that contribute to our mission.
Why Work at Halter?
