Job description

About Halter

Halter is dedicated to enabling farmers and graziers to operate more productively and sustainably. Our customers use Halter's technology to free themselves from traditional time-consuming livestock management. Imagine herding 500 cattle calmly progressing toward their next rest without the use of quad bikes, dogs or fences—this transformative and innovative approach is changing an entire industry and improving lives. Halter is built on a culture of high performance, where team members solve tough problems alongside talented colleagues, creating meaningful impact globally. Our mission attracts top investors such as Founders Fund, Bessemer Venture Partners, BOND, DCVC, Blackbird, Promus Ventures, Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck and Icehouse ventures.

Role Overview

We seek an Electronics Engineer to take full responsibility for critical components of our collar hardware. This is a hands-on role where you will influence design choices, tackle complex field challenges, and drive projects from concept to large-scale deployment. Your work will involve ultra-low power electronics, RF optimization, antenna tuning, solar power integration, battery management, audio systems, and high-voltage pulse circuitry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test electronics designed for robust animal wearable devices and related infrastructure.
  • Own the full electronic design process: selecting components, analyzing and simulating circuits, schematic capture, PCB design, prototyping, debugging, documenting, manufacturing, and testing.
  • Continuously innovate to enhance hardware reliability and performance while minimizing costs to meet aggressive targets.
  • Collaborate closely with firmware, advanced systems, mechanical teams, production, and farm personnel.
  • Design with manufacturing, testability, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in mind.
  • Create and execute validation plans to ensure all critical features meet specifications.
  • Conduct root cause analyses on manufacturing and field failures and provide actionable feedback for design improvements.

Candidate Requirements

  • A tertiary qualification in Electronics Engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 5 years of professional engineering experience, ideally gained at a larger organization before transitioning to autonomous roles; open to candidates from senior to lead/staff levels with scope for growth.
  • Demonstrated expertise designing dependable electronic hardware and delivering products at scale with full lifecycle ownership.
  • Hands-on experience with circuit board design incorporating MCUs, SoCs, IMUs, GPS, WiFi, LoRa, I2C, SPI, operational amplifiers, ADCs/DACs, switched-mode power supplies (SMPS), low dropout regulators (LDO), and mixed-signal analog/digital systems.
  • Expertise in ultra-low power IoT hardware design, including solar power harvesting, high-voltage generation and insulation, DC-DC power conversion, and power consumption optimization.
  • Proficient in using electrical engineering tools such as SPICE simulators, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, signal generators, LCR meters, current clamps, and high-voltage meters.
  • For higher-level candidates: experience mentoring engineers, leading design reviews, or owning entire subsystems.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment driven by self-motivation and high standards.
  • Located in Auckland with the willingness to travel mainly to China and Thailand approximately 1 to 2 times per quarter depending on level.
  • Experience in startup or scale-up environments is advantageous but not mandatory.

Work Environment and Culture

Halter emphasizes an office-first culture fostering in-person collaboration, which is fundamental for growth, learning, and building strong interpersonal connections. While we prioritize working from the Auckland office, flexible remote work is occasionally accommodated. We have a high-trust environment where employees are empowered to make decisions that best serve the company.

Additional Information

Halter is deeply committed to diversity and inclusion, encouraging all candidates, including those who may not match every requirement, especially women and underrepresented groups, to apply. We look forward to receiving applications accompanied by a cover letter explaining your enthusiasm for this role and the company.

Why Join Halter?
