Role Overview

The Estimator position is centered in Edmonton and plays a vital role in developing accurate financial foundations for construction projects. This role goes beyond traditional estimating by collaborating closely with Operations, Drafting & Design, Construction, and trade partners to enhance processes and align operations across the organization.

Key Priorities in Initial 6 Months

• Gain a deep understanding of Akash Homes’ estimating procedures, costs, and residential product lines.
• Enhance precision, consistency, and organization of project cost estimates and their databases.
• Contribute to ongoing process improvements and better utilization of systems within estimating.

Primary Responsibilities

• Produce comprehensive construction cost estimates for residential projects assigned.
• Interpret drawings, project specifications, and scope documents to ascertain labor and material costs.
• Assist in bid package preparation and systematically maintain project costing records.
• Scrutinize supplier and subcontractor quotes to verify competitiveness and validity.
• Update and manage estimating templates, pricing catalogs, and cost libraries.
• Track trends in labor and materials pricing and keep market rates current.
• Work collaboratively with Production, Site Teams, Drafting, and Purchasing to ensure estimates meet operational needs.
• Engage with suppliers and trade partners for pricing negotiations, material availability, and scope clarifications.
• Identify cost-saving opportunities and promote efficiency in processes.
• Support enhancements in estimating systems and ERP use.
• Maintain consistency and accuracy in all estimating workflows and documentation.
• Participate in training and development initiatives focused on residential construction and estimating best practices.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Experience in residential construction estimating or closely related construction roles.
• Proficient in interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and various project documents.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical aptitude.
• Mets high standards for accuracy and detail in data handling.
• Competent with spreadsheets, estimating software, and ERP systems.
• Excellent organization and ability to manage competing priorities effectively.
• Professional communication skills to collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, and trade partners.
• Proactive and driven attitude with emphasis on continuous improvement and teamwork.
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving business environment.

Preferred but Not Mandatory

• Prior experience in residential homebuilding or fast-growing construction settings.
• Familiarity with Alberta residential construction practices, materials, and trade scopes.
• Exposure to ERP technology, estimating tools, or cost tracking systems.
• Background in procurement, purchasing, or pre-construction coordination.
