About the Role
Join KiwiRail as an Environmental Advisor for the Mid-North Island, where your environmental expertise will support safer and more sustainable rail operations. This full-time, permanent position is based in Hamilton and covers regions including Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, and the Central Plateau. You will work closely with operational leaders and project teams to provide practical environmental advice, assess potential risks, and recommend effective control measures.
Key Responsibilities
- Advise on environmental matters for KiwiRail operations and projects across the Mid-North Island.
- Conduct risk assessments and recommend controls to mitigate environmental impacts.
- Review and contribute to environmental management plans for complex projects and sites.
- Carry out environmental audits and site verifications to ensure compliance.
- Assist with incident responses and investigations, providing corrective action recommendations.
- Support resource consenting and environmental monitoring activities.
- Deliver environmental training and toolbox talks to operational teams.
- Build and maintain relationships with councils, contractors, mana whenua, and iwi representatives.
- Contribute to the ongoing improvement and consistent application of KiwiRail’s Environmental Management System.
Candidate Requirements
- Minimum five years' experience in environmental management, compliance, or risk management, preferably within transport, construction, infrastructure, or similar operational environments.
- Strong understanding of New Zealand environmental legislation, local government requirements, and best environmental management practices.
- Proven ability to conduct environmental audits and develop or review management plans for challenging sites or projects.
- Experience handling environmental incidents, supporting investigations, and suggesting practical corrective measures.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of building rapport and influencing a variety of stakeholders both technical and operational.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Resource Management, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Current and valid New Zealand Driver’s Licence.
- Willingness and flexibility to travel to different KiwiRail sites and perform onsite duties as required.
- Meet KiwiRail’s health, safety, drug, and alcohol screening standards, both pre-employment and ongoing.
