Engineering Manager, Server Networking Security (Rust)

About the Role

Join and lead the Server Ingress Security team at MongoDB to reimagine the server's ingress networking, enhancing MongoDB clusters' security. This newly-formed team is crafting the Atlas Network Protection layer—high-performance, security-critical services that fortify pre-authentication attack surfaces and enable rapid threat responses. As a founding member, you will significantly contribute to a multi-year roadmap.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum of 3 years managing software engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, performance management, and compensation planning.
• Over 8 years of experience building production-level systems software in large backend or compiled codebases, ideally using Rust.
• Preferably experienced in performance profiling, network protocols, TLS, and connection management.
• Exhibits strong technical judgment to steer engineering decisions in security-focused or networking-related areas.
• Customer-centric mindset and ability to collaborate across teams for optimal solutions.
• Proficient in designing, implementing, testing, maintaining, and operating mission-critical software systems.
• Advanced professional or academic background in security or networking domains is a plus.
• Passionate about coaching, fostering career growth, and developing team members’ potential.
• Committed to building diverse and inclusive teams that empower engineers to excel.
• Eager and capable of quickly learning new concepts in computer science, software engineering, and leadership.

Position Expectations

• Lead an engineering team, managing hiring, growth, compensation, and performance.
• Be accountable for your team’s output and results.
• Guide the design, development, and operation of production-grade security services in Rust, prioritizing security, accuracy, performance, and operational excellence.
• Define and execute the team’s 12-month plan for the Atlas Network Protection layer.
• Collaborate with Product, Program, and Engineering leadership to specify, prioritize, and deliver new features.
• Lead or coordinate responses to urgent security incidents and customer escalations.
• Provide estimates, communicate delivery timelines, and manage risks for team projects.
• Ensure smooth team operations by removing technical obstacles, managing dependencies, and promoting team wellbeing.
• Plan for organizational growth, including resource allocation, hiring, and project assignments.

Success Metrics

• Within the first month: grasp high-level system architecture, current projects, processes, and build relationships with key stakeholders.
• Within three months: assume full team management, operate daily functions, support technical reviews, and conduct hiring as needed.
• Within six months: establish yourself as a go-to leader, own software components, and lead major feature delivery aligned with objectives.
• Within twelve months: conduct full performance and growth reviews, contribute to long-term vision and strategic planning, and enhance team capability and velocity measurably.
