Job description
About the Role
Join a pioneering AI infrastructure startup that is transforming how AI infrastructure is developed and scaled. This company creates its cloud infrastructure from scratch, owning the entire stack from datacenter hardware to software, rather than using rented compute resources.
As Engineering Manager, you will lead two scrum teams of six senior and principal engineers, specializing in backend, platform, and DevOps areas. You will be responsible for aligning your teams to product goals, ensuring predictable delivery, and nurturing team growth (increasing to nine engineers). This critical role currently lacks a dedicated manager, as the CTO has been managing the team directly and now seeks a focused leader for people management.
You will report directly to the CTO and collaborate closely with other peer engineering managers as the company scales globally. The technology stack includes GPU-native workloads, large-scale Kubernetes deployments, and multi-tenant control planes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate two scrum teams focused on backend, platform, and DevOps engineering.
- Manage and support a growing team of senior and principal engineers (currently six, expanding to nine).
- Drive team alignment with product roadmaps and enhance predictability of software delivery.
- Collaborate with product leadership to translate business goals into engineering execution.
- Recruit, hire, and onboard talented engineers to expand the team.
- Address and unblock technical and interpersonal challenges within the team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Proven engineering background in backend development, infrastructure, platform engineering, or DevOps.
- Experience managing engineering teams of 5-10 direct reports.
- Strong understanding and hands-on experience with distributed systems or cloud-native architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with product teams to implement roadmaps.
- Comfortable leading technical teams and fostering their growth and productivity.
Additional Information
- Fully remote position based in the UK, with occasional visits to Gloucester or London.
- Benefits include 30 days leave, private medical insurance, and flexible working hours.
- Salary range: £120,000 to £140,000 per year.
