Role Overview

The Engineering Manager position leads Team Handy, a multidisciplinary group of five engineers working on the Jumbo Lottery platform. Reporting to a Principal Engineering Manager, the role involves hands-on leadership overseeing technical direction, delivering on roadmap goals, and actively contributing to code development and reviews.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and direction to the engineering team on planning, delivery, and continuous improvement.
• Engage directly with the codebase through coding, patch contributions, and code reviews.
• Collaborate with business analysts and product designers to define technical solutions and specifications.
• Establish and maintain a consistent delivery rhythm including retrospectives and iterative enhancements.
• Maintain a stable and forward-looking roadmap, typically planning approximately 12 weeks ahead.
• Utilize AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code to support planning, research, coding, and review tasks.
• Uphold high technical quality standards via sound architectural and engineering practices.
• Make key architectural decisions involving databases and data-schema design.
• Partner with delivery leads and business analysts to clarify goals, anticipate risks, and manage trade-offs.
• Support engineer professional growth through coaching and feedback.
• Assist with resource planning, recruitment, and performance management activities.

Success Metrics

Within six to nine months, you will become a domain expert on the Jumbo Lottery platform, actively contribute to technical solutions, provide valuable code reviews, and help Team Handy execute its roadmap effectively with a practical action plan.

Candidate Profile and Skills Required

• Extensive hands-on software development experience equivalent to senior engineering level.
• Strong technical acumen for mastering complex codebases and software domains.
• Proficiency in crafting scalable solutions and implementing engineering best practices.
• Experience with databases and writing SQL queries, applicable across various database systems.
• Demonstrated ability to write and review high-quality production code beyond purely managerial tasks.
• Excellent communication skills to facilitate close collaboration with product and delivery teams.
• Pragmatic approach toward integrating AI into software development workflows.
• Effective in planning, prioritizing work, and managing agile project cycles like Scrum or Kanban.

Technical Environment

Jumbo's technology stack includes front-end development with React and TypeScript, backend services in Go and PHP, containerization with Docker, and PostgreSQL databases. Agile practices with continuous integration/delivery, automated testing, and focus on code quality are standard. While full expertise in all stack elements is not mandatory, strong related experience enables quick adaptation.

Working Arrangements and Culture

The role is based at the Milton office in Brisbane, following a hybrid work model with three days onsite and two days working from home each week. Flexible hours are supported, with core collaboration time set from 10 AM to 2 PM. Additional Information

• The annual salary range is AUD 150,000 to 185,000 plus superannuation.
