Job description
About the Company
Jumbo Interactive Limited, with over three decades of experience, has evolved from a single-computer setup into a global technology-driven lottery and prize draw organization listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX). Operating across Australia, the UK, Canada, and the USA, Jumbo powers government and charity lottery initiatives and connects millions to significant prizes through its consumer brands.
As the company continues to expand into new businesses and markets globally, employees thrive in an environment that encourages adaptability, lateral thinking, ownership, and comfort with ambiguity.
Role Overview
The Engineering Manager will lead Team Handy—a cross-functional group of five engineers including frontend, backend, QA, and Android specialists—focused on the Jumbo Lottery platform. Reporting to a Principal Engineering Manager, this hands-on leadership role involves guiding technical direction, actively engaging in coding, solution architecture, and code reviews, while ensuring delivery aligns with the roadmap.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support a small, multi-disciplinary engineering team to plan, execute, and refine their work.
- Contribute hands-on to the codebase, reviewing and producing code while developing deep domain expertise.
- Collaborate with business analysts and product designers to craft technical specifications and design solutions for upcoming roadmap features.
- Establish and maintain effective delivery rhythms including retrospectives and other continuous improvement practices.
- Work towards stabilizing the team’s roadmap with approximately 12 weeks of planned work.
- Utilize AI-assisted tools (e.g., Claude Code) for tasks such as sprint planning, code review, research, patching, and design.
- Ensure technical excellence through robust solution design, engineering standards, and clear communication.
- Make architectural decisions, including evaluating database and schema changes for feasibility.
- Partner with the Delivery Lead and Business Analyst to clarify goals, identify delivery risks early, and manage trade-offs.
- Provide coaching and career development support to engineers, delivering regular feedback to build team capabilities for sustainable delivery and system maintenance.
- Support resource planning, hiring processes, and performance management activities.
Success Metrics
Within the first six to nine months, the successful candidate will develop deep expertise in the Jumbo Lottery platform, contribute actively to technical discussions and code quality enhancement, and lead Team Handy in delivering roadmap objectives with practical planning.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Proven hands-on software development experience, operating at or near a senior engineer level.
- Strong capacity to grasp complex codebases and become a subject-matter expert in specific software domains.
- Experience in designing scalable solutions applying engineering best practices.
- Database and data schema expertise, including proficiency with SQL in any variant.
- Ability to write, review, and maintain production-quality code alongside leading teams.
- Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with product managers and delivery partners.
- Familiarity and thoughtful approach to integrating AI tools in software development workflows.
- Proficient in planning, prioritization, and Agile delivery methods such as Scrum or Kanban, including use of project management tools.
Technology Stack and Work Environment
Jumbo employs React and TypeScript on the frontend and Go and PHP on the backend, supported by Docker and PostgreSQL. The team follows Agile methodologies with continuous integration/delivery, automated testing, and code quality standards. While deep expertise in all technologies isn’t mandatory, strong technical depth and adaptability are essential.
Team Handy operates using Scrum and holds a weekly "Connect Day" on Wednesdays, adapting delivery practices as needed. The Engineering Manager is empowered to influence team workflows, retrospectives, and continuous improvement.
Employment Details and Work Culture
The position is based at the Milton office in Brisbane, with a hybrid work model permitting three days in-office collaboration and two days remote work per week. Flexible working hours accommodate core team interaction between 10 AM and 2 PM.
