Job description
About ZURU
ZURU is focused on transforming various industries by introducing groundbreaking innovations and advanced automation. The company operates through different divisions: ZURU Toys revolutionizing play, ZURU Tech innovating construction, and ZURU Edge launching next-generation FMCG brands tailored for today's consumers. Established in 2003 by entrepreneurs Nick and Mat Mowbray, ZURU has rapidly expanded to a workforce of over 5,000 globally across more than 30 locations. Recognised as one of the largest toy manufacturers worldwide, acclaimed brands under ZURU include Bunch O Balloons, Mini Brands, XSHOT, Rainbocorns, and Smashers, alongside FMCG products like MONDAY Haircare and others.
Role Overview
The Engineering Lead position is responsible for defining how ZURU develops internal software — focusing on building the platform engineers use and managing all internal applications deployed on it. This role establishes the engineering function supporting multiple groups internally, covering developer platforms, embedded engineering teams, and cloud reliability. The lead owns both the infrastructure pathway and the applications utilizing it, fostering adoption rather than just documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver development tools such as CI/CD pipelines, scaffolding, deployment frameworks, monitoring, and policy guardrails as tangible products integrated into repositories rather than as separate documentation.
- Measure success based on how many teams adopt these tools, not the quantity of descriptive materials.
- Recruit and manage engineers embedded within business units to validate, build, and support solutions until they mature.
- Oversee the lifecycle of internal applications, determining which enter a supported maintenance rotation, which become part of a packaged software set, and which are retired, ensuring each has a designated business owner and retirement plan.
- Manage runtime infrastructure, observability systems, and on-call schedules responsible for maintaining applications after developers transition.
- Implement automated compliance by embedding standards checks into every code change, ensuring all rules are verifiable and enforced.
- Act as the interface between Engineering teams creating solutions and Enterprise Technology teams managing packaged applications, facilitating proper handoffs.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineering leader experienced in creating internal software used company-wide, developing platform or developer-experience teams evaluated by product adoption, and building engineering teams from scratch. They emphasize outcome quality alongside development velocity, possess accountability for system reliability beyond their own code, and understand the criticality of managing both the platform and its users.
Work Culture & Benefits
ZURU fosters a high-achieving culture where creativity and performance coexist with enjoyment. Team members are encouraged to take ownership of their career paths within a rapidly expanding organization offering unique growth opportunities. Benefits include a supportive growth environment, health coverage, global career options, competitive pay, and workplace perks such as fresh fruit and coffee available on-site.
