About the Payments Platform Team
This team focuses on transforming complex global payment challenges into scalable infrastructure that simplifies how businesses accept and move money globally. They develop the core systems that process payments efficiently across markets, integrating payment functions directly into business workflows to enhance conversion rates and reduce friction. The team operates at the intersection of performance, reliability, regulatory complexities, and commercial priorities, making tangible impacts on customer experience.
Role Overview
As Engineering Director for the Payments Platform, you will lead teams responsible for the development and operations of critical components in Airwallex's payment ecosystem. Your role blends leadership, architectural oversight, and product delivery ownership. This position is based in Singapore with options for United Kingdom or San Francisco locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and drive the strategic vision and roadmap for the Payments Platform, encompassing payment processing, routing, settlement, reconciliation, and partner integrations, ensuring global scalability and reliability.
- Lead, mentor, and grow engineering managers and senior engineers across multiple teams, fostering a high-impact culture of ownership and continuous improvement while managing team growth strategically.
- Set architectural standards and direction for large-scale, mission-critical payment systems emphasizing reliability, observability, security, scalability, and developer efficiency.
- Manage execution across projects by establishing clear objectives and key results (OKRs), balancing short-term deliveries with sustainable long-term investments and operational health.
- Collaborate with cross-functional partners including Product, Commercial, Risk, Compliance, and regional leaders to align technical solutions with business strategies and regulatory compliance.
Required Qualifications
- Over 10 years of experience in software engineering with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
- Proven experience managing engineering managers or leads and scaling high-performing teams.
- Strong product orientation with a record of partnering effectively with Product teams to define roadmaps and prioritize work for business impact.
- Expertise in software architecture, system design, and leadership in complex distributed systems.
- Ability to thrive in fast-paced, high-growth environments valuing ownership, iterative improvements, and quick delivery.
- Background in fintech, payments, financial services, or regulated industries where accuracy and data integrity are paramount.
