About the Role
Join the National Aquarium of New Zealand as a Diver/Aquarist for a 12-month fixed-term position where you will actively contribute to the care and wellbeing of marine animals at one of the country’s premier attractions. Your responsibilities encompass daily animal husbandry, underwater maintenance through professional diving, managing life support systems, and delivering captivating visitor experiences to foster curiosity and conservation awareness.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consistent care and monitoring of aquatic animals including feeding, enrichment activities, health observation, and record maintenance.
- Engage in safe, professional diving operations to perform underwater cleaning, husbandry, and exhibit upkeep.
- Assist with the upkeep and operation of aquaria and life-support equipment, such as water quality testing and general maintenance.
- Present informative talks, hands-on encounters, and behind-the-scenes tours to educate and inspire visitors.
- Participate in ongoing improvement projects, training opportunities, and maintain a culture focused on safety and professional teamwork.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrates a genuine passion for animal welfare, conservation, and maintaining high standards of care.
- Hands-on experience in animal care with an enthusiasm for physically active and practical work.
- Holds relevant diving certification (minimum PADI Rescue Diver or equivalent) and can meet medical and occupational diving health requirements.
- Effective communication skills to engage visitors of various backgrounds, including schools, in an approachable and professional way.
- Dependable, attentive to detail, and able to perform well under pressure within team-based, safety-sensitive environments.

This position involves 40 hours per week on a rostered schedule at the National Aquarium located on Napier’s Marine Parade. The remuneration package ranges from NZD 66,223 to NZD 74,014 annually (inclusive of KiwiSaver), depending on skills and experience.
