Job description
About Black Forest Labs
Black Forest Labs (BFL) is the innovative team behind pioneering technologies like Latent Diffusion, Stable Diffusion, and FLUX, which have transformed how images and videos are created globally. Their FLUX models rank among the world’s most advanced, supporting millions of creators, developers, and companies around the world. Headquartered in Freiburg, Germany with a growing presence in San Francisco, BFL is rapidly expanding while maintaining its core values of research excellence, open science, and enabling human creativity.
Role Overview
As Black Forest Labs strives to make FLUX the preferred model and platform for developers by 2026, this role focuses on optimizing the full developer experience across all touchpoints—SDKs, APIs, dashboards, onboarding flows, and more. You will be the driving force to identify and eliminate friction points for both human developers and autonomous agents using the platform, delivering a seamless, intuitive experience that matches the excellence seen in top platforms like Stripe and Vercel.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of the developer experience as an end-to-end product, prioritizing improvements from API contracts to dashboards, SDKs, and backend services.
- Collaborate closely with platform engineers to influence API design proactively, ensuring the developer and agent perspective is considered during development.
- Enhance developer-facing dashboard features such as playgrounds, API key management, usage insights, request inspection tools, and webhook debugging.
- Optimize the platform’s usability for autonomous agents by managing the MCP server, skills, agent onboarding, and machine-readable API elements, ensuring these are highly accessible and reliable for AI workflows.
- Maintain and evolve the portfolio of developer entry points including SDKs (Python, TypeScript, others on request), MCP servers, skills, and OpenAPI interfaces, facilitating composable workflows and robust async handling.
- Work alongside Growth and Product teams to analyze and improve the developer funnel from signup to repeat production calls, removing experience blockers.
- Establish and advocate for strong opinions on versioning, error handling formats, breaking change policies, idempotency, and naming conventions to raise the bar on API and SDK design.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum 4 years of professional software development experience focused on developer-facing products like SDKs, APIs, dashboards, and consoles used by external developers.
- Proficient full-stack developer with experience in TypeScript, React, and Next.js on the frontend, and Python plus ideally Go or Rust on the backend.
- Possess a deep understanding of API design principles including error formats, pagination, async job handling, and managing breaking changes based on real-world experiences.
- Familiarity with the 2026 agent ecosystem such as MCP, agent runtimes, and their unique error handling and usability challenges.
- Proven track record shipping external-facing developer products — not internal tooling.
- Strong execution focus, embodying a product engineering approach rather than merely product management.
Preferred Experience
- Previous work at companies where developer experience was a strategic priority (e.g., Stripe, Vercel, Cloudflare).
- Experience building or contributing significantly to MCP servers used by agents or users.
- Knowledge of media-generation or other asynchronous, high-latency APIs and their user experience challenges such as polling, webhooks, and partial result handling.
- A publicly visible portfolio such as open source contributions, technical writeups, or dashboards exemplifying your design and coding abilities.
Work Environment
BFL operates a hybrid work model emphasizing meaningful in-person interactions at offices in Freiburg or San Francisco, with options for remote work accompanied by occasional visits. They provide travel support and prioritize inclusivity and accessibility in their structure. The company culture is defined by four core values: being obsessive about quality and science, low ego with collaborative credit culture, boldness in shipping early, and kindness in interpersonal relationships.
Compensation
The role offers a competitive base salary ranging from €140,000 to €190,000 annually, in addition to equity opportunities.
