Detector Dog Trainer

Position Overview

This permanent full-time role based in Māngere, Auckland, focuses on training and supporting Border Clearance Services personnel involved in the detector dog program to ensure they maintain a high level of competency in their duties.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver technical guidance, instructions, and advice to management and frontline staff.
• Provide mentoring and coaching to Detector Dog Handlers in operational contexts.
• Collaborate with Detector Dog Training and Leadership Teams through strong communication and teamwork.
• Organize and conduct validation classes and formal assessments to sustain and enhance Dog Handler proficiency.
• Develop and update training materials, competency assessments, manuals, and related documentation.
• Travel across various MPI locations throughout New Zealand to deliver training and support services.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an effective communicator, both verbally and in writing, ideally holding an adult teaching qualification complemented by experience or qualifications in animal behavior. Patience, diplomacy, and the aptitude to work amidst uncertainty are essential.

You should have demonstrated ability in teaching and training both people and dogs. Experience from government detector dog programs or in training working dogs is highly desirable.

• Understanding of detector dog handling, canine behavior, and welfare standards.
• Proven experience in training, handling, and deploying working dogs.
• Capacity to perform effectively under pressure.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and engage effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal abilities for teamwork and collaboration.

Organizational Context

The role is based at the MPI Centre in Mangere, Auckland, working alongside other trainers and the kennel team, which includes a Team Leader, dog care specialists, and about 60 Detector dogs.
