Position Overview
The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is seeking a Veterinary Technical Supervisor 2 to join their Live Animals team in Auckland. This permanent, full-time position plays a crucial role in safeguarding New Zealand's biosecurity by ensuring the safe and compliant international movement of live animals. The role involves diverse hands-on tasks with various animal species, combining animal welfare, export certification, and biosecurity considerations within dynamic and time-sensitive environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections of imported animals alongside thorough reviews of all relevant documentation.
- Perform audits on animal quarantine facilities to ensure compliance.
- Evaluate and verify export and welfare standards for live animals and germplasm.
- Issue export certifications in compliance with international protocols and regulations.
- Participate in a scheduled after-hours roster with advance notice, supporting work-life balance.
Team Environment
The successful candidate will join a team of ten veterinarians and three advisors, under experienced leadership, all committed to upholding animal welfare, biosecurity, and New Zealand’s global reputation. Candidate Profile
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand.
- Clinical veterinary experience demonstrating sound professional judgement.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage various stakeholders confidently.
- Excellent attention to detail coupled with the capability to make clear, evidence-based decisions.
- Genuine commitment to animal welfare and protection of New Zealand’s biosecurity.
- Current full New Zealand driver’s license or equivalent (not provisional or learner).
