Job description
Overview
We are looking for a Design Engineer responsible for the creation, enhancement, and optimization of mechanical components, products, jigs, fixtures, tools, and manufacturing processes, collaborating closely with departments such as Production, Quality, Procurement, Maintenance, and Manufacturing Engineering to produce practical, cost-efficient, and high-quality solutions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical parts, assemblies, tools, jigs, and production apparatus.
- Generate detailed 2D drawings, 3D CAD models, bills of materials (BOMs), and precise engineering specifications.
- Utilize CAD tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or equivalent for designing and revising components.
- Ensure product designs comply with manufacturing requirements, quality standards, safety protocols, and customer expectations.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), appropriate fits, material specifications, and dimensional tolerances in design.
- Evaluate current designs to identify opportunities for cost reduction, quality enhancement, and process efficiency improvements.
- Incorporate principles of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) in the design process.
- Collaborate with production teams to troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing and assembly challenges related to design.
- Assist in prototype creation, trials, testing, and validation of new or altered designs.
- Maintain and update engineering documentation including drawings, BOMs, specifications, and revision logs.
- Coordinate with vendors for tooling, fabricated items, machined components, and other engineering needs.
- Conduct root-cause analyses for design-induced production or quality issues and implement corrective measures.
- Support engineering change management including ECN/ECR and product update processes.
- Participate actively in design reviews and cross-departmental improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to applicable engineering standards, internal processes, and safety regulations.
- Keep accurate records and documentation for engineering activities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related disciplines.
- Between 2 to 5 years of practical experience in mechanical or product design within manufacturing settings.
- Strong competence in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, tolerance analysis, fits, materials, and manufacturing technology.
- Proficiency with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Creo, or CATIA.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, sheet metal work, welding, casting, forging, and injection molding.
- Good understanding of manufacturing and assembly workflows.
- Effective problem solving and analytical capabilities.
- Ability to collaborate well across teams including Production, Quality, Maintenance, and Procurement.
Key Performance Indicators
- Precision and quality of design outputs.
- Ease of manufacturability of designed components and assemblies.
- Reduction in production and material costs through design improvements.
- Minimization of defects linked to design issues.
- Timely delivery of engineering drawings and projects.
- Successful execution of engineering modifications and changes.
- Continuous efforts toward productivity and process enhancements.
