Job description
Role Overview
NiuPay is looking for proficient Data Specialists to carry out professional translation tasks between English and Papua New Guinean languages, with a strong focus on Tok Pisin. The position involves generating high-quality language evaluation content used to train AI datasets.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate a variety of real-world materials, especially relating to public services and community life, into clear and accurate Tok Pisin or other PNG languages with professional quality.
- Perform quality reviews of translations done by team members and contribute to the creation and maintenance of glossaries and style guides.
- Participate in developing evaluation content that measures the effectiveness of AI systems understanding PNG languages.
- Engage in training for quality standards and language tools alongside a small team of linguistic experts.
- Progress through defined career stages toward senior and principal specialist roles based on consistency and quality of work.
Candidate Profile
- Possess strong written skills in English and Tok Pisin or other Papua New Guinean languages.
- Highly attentive to detail, with a strong sense for correcting language errors until they are resolved.
- No prior formal translation qualification or job experience required; suitable backgrounds include teachers, journalists, university students or graduates, editors, church or mission translators, or those recognized as language reviewers in their communities.
- Additional fluency in other PNG languages is advantageous.
- Comfortable with computers and quick to adapt to new software and AI tools.
- Capable of following written standards while noting any inadequacies or gaps.
- Maintain confidentiality and discretion regarding sensitive translation materials.
Additional Information
Both full-time and part-time positions are available. Training on quality frameworks and tools will be provided. The application process includes submission of a CV and cover letter (with at least one paragraph written in Tok Pisin or strongest PNG language), and a paid two-hour translation assessment for shortlisted candidates.
