About The Team

The Applied Research team comprises data scientists and content experts skilled in machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI, focused on delivering user and business value. They promote innovation via product experimentation and model development, partnering with Product and Engineering teams across diverse domains such as content enrichment, representation learning, recommendations, search, and translation. Their work involves processing massive data scales, including hundreds of millions of documents and billions of interactions.

Role Overview

The Data Scientist II will design and implement impactful AI and ML models, collaborating across teams with ML Engineers, Data Engineers, and Product members. This role demands curiosity, teamwork, and an aptitude for creating streamlined, scalable models incorporating extensive datasets and language models.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop solutions for diverse content classification scenarios using traditional NLP, large language models, and generative AI techniques.
• Explore approaches to tackle challenging large-scale problems specific to Scribd.
• Work collaboratively with Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and ML Data Engineers on multi-disciplinary projects.
• Utilize a broad range of algorithms, including classical techniques with Scikit-learn and NumPy, custom neural networks via PyTorch, and third-party LLM APIs.
• Handle vast datasets using Python, SQL, and Spark technologies.
• Effectively communicate project approaches and outcomes to stakeholders verbally and in writing, while maintaining comprehensive documentation.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience post qualification in developing machine learning models, operating scalable systems, and production deployment.
• Strong proficiency with Python programming.
• Hands-on experience constructing ML pipelines and working with distributed data frameworks such as Apache Spark or Databricks.
• Intermediate expertise in a minimum of three areas: classification algorithms, natural language processing, search, information retrieval, named entity recognition, deep learning, or generative modeling.
• Competence in SQL or PySpark at an intermediate level or above.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitatively focused discipline like Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or Artificial Intelligence.

Compensation and Location Specifics

Salary ranges are determined based on geographic labor costs, experience, skill set, education, and organizational needs. In Canada, the salary range for this role is estimated between 123000 CAD and 150000 CAD. This position also offers competitive equity ownership and an extensive benefits package. Candidates must reside in or near permitted cities, including Ottawa, Toronto, or Vancouver in Canada.
