About Tonkin + Taylor

Tonkin + Taylor stands as New Zealand's premier engineering and environmental consultancy, recognized for its technical prowess in tackling complex challenges. As an employee-owned New Zealand company, their collective purpose is to build and sustain a better world.

Role Overview

We are looking for a proficient Data Platform & Analytics Engineer to architect and enhance our Databricks Enterprise data platform. Embedded within the Business Intelligence team, your role will concentrate on constructing robust, scalable, and well-governed data transformation pipelines with Databricks and dbt, ensuring delivery of dependable datasets to aid reporting, analytics, and operational decision-making.

This position is technically focused, with occasional assistance in reporting and insight creation as required. Collaboration with BI Developers, Data Analysts, and Technology teams is essential to forge engineering standards and best practices, enabling sustainable scaling of analytical capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create and sustain data transformation workflows using dbt within the Databricks environment.
  • Architect and execute scalable ELT frameworks applying the Databricks Medallion Architecture across Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers.
  • Aggregate and integrate data from diverse operational sources into a governed enterprise data warehouse.
  • Construct, refine, and maintain trusted enterprise data models utilizing dimensional modeling methods, including fact and dimension tables as well as conformed dimensions.
  • Develop reusable, thoroughly tested, and well-documented transformation logic leveraging dbt tests and other relevant data quality frameworks.
  • Optimize complex SQL transformations for enhanced performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Implement incremental data processing models and optimize Delta Lake's performance.
  • Validate datasets for accuracy, completeness, and business alignment by reconciling and verifying against source systems.
  • Investigate and address data quality concerns and transformation errors promptly.
  • Continuously monitor data pipeline performance to identify and apply improvements.
  • Support continual enhancement of the enterprise semantic data layer.
  • Lead migration efforts transforming existing Power BI data logic into the Databricks platform.
  • Collaborate closely with BI Developers, Data Analysts, and Technology colleagues to supply trustworthy, analytics-ready datasets for reporting and analytical tasks.
  • Contribute to the development of engineering standards and reusable templates through peer code reviews, technical guidance, comprehensive documentation, knowledge sharing, and informal mentorship.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be an experienced Data Engineer with hands-on expertise in deploying modern data solutions within enterprise or cloud ecosystems, coupled with an unwavering dedication to delivering dependable, maintainable, and governed data products.

  • Proficient in designing and developing data transformation pipelines using dbt or comparable tools.
  • Advanced command of SQL, including complex query writing, optimization, and performance tuning.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing enterprise data warehouses and cloud-based ELT pipelines.
  • Deep understanding of dimensional data modeling practices encompassing star schemas, fact tables, dimension tables, and management of slowly changing dimensions.
  • Practical familiarity with Delta Lake technologies, Medallion Architecture concepts, and multi-layered data platform design.
  • Experience with Azure data services and contemporary cloud data warehousing solutions.
  • Competence in Python for data engineering automation tasks.
  • Implementation experience with data quality assurance methods such as validation, reconciliation, testing, and monitoring.
  • Use of Git, CI/CD pipelines, and adherence to version-controlled development methodologies.
  • Adept in developing trusted, analytics-optimized datasets suitable for Power BI and similar reporting platforms.
  • Ability to work autonomously under broad guidelines with sound technical decision-making.
  • High attention to detail, focused on delivering solutions that are reliable, well-tested, maintainable, and thoroughly documented.
  • Possession of a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent applied experience in data engineering, computer science, information systems, or related fields.

Benefits

  • Wellbeing support including an annual allowance, 24/7 nurse consultations, free flu vaccinations, fresh fruit provisions, and additional leave resources.
  • Commitment to inclusion and sustainability manifested through cultural training, accessible working practices, Gender Tick and Rainbow Tick certifications, and Net Zero Carbon adherence.
  • Career development opportunities incorporating mentoring, leadership training, exposure to diverse professional expertise and projects, professional memberships, and funded training aligned with personal growth objectives.
  • Supportive policies catering to life milestones including primary carer salary top-ups for 26 weeks, partner leave of up to 4 weeks, back-to-work coaching, and long-service leave.
