Overview

Join Microsoft as a Data Center Technician (DCT) based in Canberra, where you will be responsible for staging, setting up, and deploying hardware equipment. You will troubleshoot and diagnose hardware issues and perform hardware decommissions for routine changes and refresh projects according to established Standard Operating Procedures. This role is fully onsite and provides opportunities to deepen your understanding of data center protocols, mentor peers, and gain experience with security and data management processes while advancing in your career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware issues by following standard procedures, quickly identifying root causes and replacing defective components to minimize impact on customers and business operations.
  • Conduct quality assurance checks after task completion to confirm proper grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling arrangement consistent with safety protocols and planned network configurations.
  • Execute hardware decommissioning for straightforward changes such as memory upgrades or rebuilds with minimal supervision, adhering to established processes.
  • Report and escalate incidents promptly to appropriate data center management, technician leads, or engineering specialists as per communication protocols.
  • Support and guide fellow technicians with complex or challenging tasks to ensure successful completion.
  • Complete all role-specific training and gain hands-on experience by shadowing seasoned technicians.
  • Promote a collaborative and positive team environment by sharing updates, participating in meetings, and staying informed about colleagues’ work progress.
  • Exhibit a strong sense of ownership and responsibility for service quality, operational completeness, and the overall user experience within the data center.
  • Live and uphold Microsoft’s cultural values in daily work activities.

Qualifications

Mandatory Requirements:

  • High school diploma, GED, TAFE, or equivalent education level.
  • Fundamental understanding of computer hardware and its components.
  • At least 1 year of professional experience supporting IT equipment or related technology.

Security and Background Checks:

  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud background checks at hiring and every two years afterward.
  • Verification of Australian citizenship through valid documentation, including an Australian passport.
  • May require NV1/2 or PV security clearance assessments as mandated by Australian Government Security Vetting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of experience supporting IT or related technology hardware.
  • Relevant certifications such as CompTIA A+, Server+, Network+, or Basic Structure Cabling (BSC).
