Position Summary

The Custodian is responsible for performing thorough sanitation and cleaning duties to uphold a hygienic, safe, and comfortable environment within the facility.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, polishing, waxing floors, and cleaning windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, and equipment.
• Maintain cleanliness of washrooms, shower rooms, offices, classrooms, and other facility areas.
• Restock hygiene supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, and soap.
• Empty trash receptacles and manage waste disposal in compactors and bins.
• Sanitize and disinfect areas and equipment as per protocols.
• Conduct spot cleaning and deeper carpet maintenance as required.
• Engage in extensive cleaning operations like carpet cleaning, stripping, waxing floors, and light maintenance during off-peak hours.
• Organize and manage janitorial supplies both in storage rooms and on carts, tracking inventory accurately.
• Report necessary repairs and maintenance needs to the Custodial Supervisor.
• Lift and relocate furniture when requested.
• Work both independently and collaboratively with team members to complete duties punctually and meet quality standards.
• Participate in mandatory and specialized training sessions.
• Provide laundry services according to program or departmental requirements.
• Adhere strictly to all sanitation and building disinfecting procedures.
• Attend meetings as directed by the Director of Facilities or Custodial Supervisor.
• Carry out additional related tasks as assigned.

Working Environment

• This role is a temporary, full-time position (40 hours per week) until December 31, 2026.
• Service is provided at a men's residential shelter, requiring work both inside and outdoors across all seasons.
• Physical demands include moving furniture, pushing, pulling, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Tasks involve handling garbage and cleaning human waste as well as hazardous bio-substances.
• Exposure to odors, toxic chemicals, electrical risks, and infectious agents is expected.
• Potential interactions with aggressive individuals, including verbal and occasional physical confrontations.
• Risks include needle-stick injuries, back strain, and repetitive motion injuries.

Qualifications and Experience

• High school completion or equivalent required.
• Must pass a Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Search.
• Child Intervention Check needed if working near children.
• A minimum of three months prior related experience involving life skills and familiarity with cleaning and maintenance tasks is essential.

• Knowledge of safety protocols related to hazardous chemicals, equipment use, and personal protective measures.
• Experience handling and safely mixing cleaning chemicals.
• Initiative and responsibility in working autonomously.

Compensation

The position offers a salary range between $17.45 and $21.81 per hour, with a maximum rate of $26.17, determined by market factors, internal parity, and candidate qualifications.
