Craft Arborist

Position Overview

The Office of Public Works (OPW) is seeking qualified individuals to fill the Craft Arborist role at Phoenix Park and associated locations, headquartered at Whitefields, Phoenix Park, Dublin, D08 KDC4. This full-time, on-site role requires adherence to public safety and environmental standards in arboricultural work.

Eligibility Criteria

• Possession of a minimum Advanced Level 6 Certificate in Arboriculture or an equivalent Irish or foreign qualification recognized under the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.
• Applicants must provide evidence of apprenticeship completion, craft certification, and successful exam results.
• Valid, current competence certification for operational tasks such as tree felling, pruning, use of wood chippers, pole pruners, and other tree surgery operations (certifications must be from NPTC/City & Guilds, Lantra, or equivalent).
• Minimum 3 years of relevant post-qualification work experience.
• Possession of a full, clean, current Irish driving licence (category B & W), including use of personal transport. Automatic-only licences (code 78) are not accepted. UK/NI licences must be exchanged for an Irish licence if resident in Ireland.
• A current Safe Pass card or proof of successful completion of the Safe Pass course before application closing.
• Employment permit for non-EEA nationals unless exempted; candidates must be legally eligible to work in Ireland, including EEA, UK, Switzerland citizens, or those holding certain visa stamps (Stamp 41, Stamp 5, or acceptable Stamp 4 equivalents).

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Implement safety standards and conduct risk assessments specific to tree care operations.
• Operate various hand, power, and mechanized arboricultural equipment safely and according to manufacturers' guidelines.
• Perform ground-based arboriculture work following industry standards, legal and regulatory requirements.
• Identify hazards and mitigate risks associated with tree surgery while minimizing environmental impact and properly managing waste disposal.
• Understand and apply relevant pest and disease control legislation.
• Recognize common pest, disease, disorder, and mechanical injury affecting woody plants and strategies for control.
• Conduct tree surveys, plan remedial actions, and maintain tree collections through planting, cultivation, and propagation where applicable.
• Maintain accurate records and surveys of tree collections collaboratively with management.
• Supervise developmental projects, allocate work to general operatives and horticultural assistants, and oversee contractors.
• Coordinate daily and weekly work programs, document work activities, and ensure safe and efficient execution.
• Provide training and supervision to apprentices and students, manage attendance and records, and facilitate practical skills assessments.
• Engage with the public through information dissemination, guided tours, and lectures.
• Participate in training, professional development events, and deputize for senior gardening management roles as needed.
• Complete necessary reporting including accidents, incidents, and comply fully with OPW health and safety policies.
• Perform other duties consistent with the role’s responsibilities and grade as assigned by management.

Additional Important Information

• Compliance with all safety tools and personal protective equipment use (STC boots, chainsaw PPE) is mandatory.
• Valid driving license with category B & W to use own transport is essential; restrictions disqualify candidates.
• Non-EEA candidates must have valid employment permits and ensure their work permissions remain current throughout employment.
