Control Engineer

Role Overview

The Control Engineer position demands extensive practical experience and formal OEM training in drilling rig control systems, including PLC, SCADA, instrumentation, networking, and computer installations. Candidates ideally hold a bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Telecom Engineering, or Computer Science, although this is not mandatory.

Experience and Expertise

Applicants should possess between 10 to 15 years of practical supervisory experience managing electronics and drilling control systems, familiar with primary drilling OEM products, preferably supported by OEM training or prior employment. A comprehensive understanding of onboard rig electronics, communication systems, and advanced troubleshooting skills for control, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems is essential. Proficiency in CMMS, documentation control, and data management is also required.

Key Responsibilities

• Developing and sustaining discipline-specific SOPs for electronics and control systems.
• Reviewing and validating maintenance procedures and testing sequences, advancing approvals via MOC and technical governance.
• Ensuring adherence to regulatory and industry standards such as API, OEM manuals, and Class/Flag regulations.
• Leading troubleshooting efforts on various control systems including Amphion, Cyberbase, Centurion, engine controls, hydraulic and pneumatic controls, AC/DC drives, rig instrumentation, fire and gas, PAGA, PABX, navigation, weather monitoring, PLC for jacking and fixation systems, crane and vehicle electronics.
• Supporting rig electronics technicians during critical downtimes and malfunctions.
• Validating root-cause analyses and ensuring corrective actions address mechanical, hydraulic, or control system failures in collaboration with Mechanical and Electrical SMEs.
• Reviewing and recommending preventive maintenance routines, schedules, function-test intervals, and task lists aligned with OEM recommendations and safety requirements.
• Executing and overseeing maintenance processes that meet applicable standards and requirements.
• Conducting inspections on control system integrity, instrumentation, digital networks, PLCs, SBCs, and OEM computers to identify risks, failures, certification gaps, and regulatory deviations; escalating issues appropriately.
• Providing SME support for overhauls, upgrades, or replacements of control systems addressing obsolescence or OEM updates.
• Reviewing engineering documents, OEM scopes, FAT/SAT plans, pressure test protocols, and recertification packages.
• Contributing to budget preparations aligned with forecasted business plans.
• Assessing critical spares, monitoring reliability KPIs, and recommending enhancements for redundancy, standardization, and obsolescence management across the rig fleet.
• Maintaining up-to-date records, schematics, software backups, and data imagery within controlled repositories.
• Issuing comprehensive inspection reports, technical advisories, and integrity assessments post rig evaluations.
• Ensuring complete and compliant CMMS and certification documentation aligned with regulatory demands.
