Role Overview

As a Contract Manager, you will oversee a portfolio of high-value and complex public transport contracts with an annual expenditure around $120 million. Acting as the chief commercial lead, you will ensure service delivery aligns with safety standards, efficiency, customer expectations, and regulatory requirements. This position involves strategic relationship oversight, commercial management, and governance leadership aimed at fostering continuous improvement and cost-effectiveness within Canterbury’s public transport network.

This role presents an exciting chance to join as the council prepares for the re-tendering of bus operating contracts and introduces a new operational model where the council asserts control over strategic assets.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer complex public transport service contracts and the associated governance frameworks.
• Lead negotiations related to contracts, including renewals, amendments, and dispute resolutions.
• Track performance metrics, regulatory compliance, risk management, and financial results.
• Establish and nurture strong partnerships with service operators, suppliers, and other relevant stakeholders.
• Provide strategic counsel and actionable insights to aid in informed decision-making and service enhancement.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will have a solid background in commercial or contract management, particularly in environments with multiple stakeholders. You should exhibit strong commercial insight alongside excellent interpersonal skills for negotiations, governance, and strategic dialogue. Analytical thinking, problem-solving orientation, and a drive to achieve beneficial outcomes for communities are critical.

Experience & Qualifications

• A tertiary qualification in Business, Commerce, Law, Procurement, Contract Management, or a related discipline is preferred.
• At least seven years of experience managing complex operational, service, or commercial contracts.
• Proven expertise in contract governance, performance oversight, and risk management.
• Demonstrated success in developing and sustaining trusted relationships with stakeholders and suppliers.
• Ability to analyze performance data and recommend practical improvements.
• Experience in leading contract negotiations, amendments, and resolving intricate issues.
• Strong commercial judgment coupled with effective risk management skills.
• Capability to influence senior leaders and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
