Role Overview

The Community Ministry Worker will support the food service operations at The Salvation Army East Kootenay Circuit in Fernie, British Columbia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with food recovery by sorting and distributing donated food items.
  • Perform janitorial tasks including dusting, sweeping, floor and bathroom cleaning, and other duties as needed.
  • Drive to collect food and deliver recycling, electronics, or other items when volunteers are unavailable.
  • Receive and organize donations for Community Food Services or the Thrift Store.
  • Welcome and assist donors and guests, providing information about services or directing them appropriately.
  • Monitor equipment, such as logging refrigerator temperatures and noting repairs.
  • Build and maintain meaningful relationships by engaging with guests and donors to support their well-being.
  • Provide program assistance to supervisors, store managers, volunteers, and staff.
  • Assist with inventory tracking and management.
  • Clean and sanitize after food distribution, including dishes and storage bins.
  • Maintain and keep the coffee station clean and well-stocked.
  • Communicate effectively to guide guests to services offered by The Salvation Army or community partners.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure the safety of clients and volunteers by maintaining cleanliness and adhering to all health and safety protocols.
  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations and internal policies.

Financial and Materials Management

  • Assist in managing food bank materials including tracking donations and distribution.
  • Handle gift cards with values up to $100 responsibly.

Work Environment

  • This is a full-time permanent role with typical hours from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though Wednesday hours may differ.
  • The role may require lifting or moving items up to 80 pounds regularly.
  • Tasks involve frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and prolonged standing.
  • Work is performed mostly at a local elementary school in generally agreeable conditions.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Secondary School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification is mandatory.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record is required.
  • Minimum two years of related work experience.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is between 18.25 and 22.23 Canadian dollars per hour, with a maximum of 26.20. Placement within this range depends on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate qualifications.
